Highland League round-up

Saturday November 17th

High flying Scorries still top of SHFL

In so far as it is possible to predict results in an ever
more competitive league most of the day's SHFL games went by the formbook.

Wick Academy thrilled a big Harmsworth Park crowd with a 3-1
win over Formartine United to hang on to top spot. Richard Macadie drilled in a
14th minute opener when Gary Manson's high free kick to the back
post came to him after being slapped away by keeper Andy Shearer. A fine run
down the left set up a second after 33 minutes. He passed the ball inside to
Gary Weir whose angled shot was cleared only as far as Manson who returned it
to Weir who thundered in a 20 yard shot off the underside of the bar. The
Scorries were under the cosh as half-time approached and Daniel Park stabbed in
43rd minute goal. Academy held off further pressure in the second
half  until a timely substitution saw
Lucasz Geruzel come off the bench to hammer in a third goal, a quarter of an
hour from time.

Cove Rangers also enjoyed a 3-1 win against Forres Mechanics
at Rainbow Taxis Allan Park to regain second place and set up top of the table
clash with Academy at the same venue this Saturday. Paul Emslie netted after 27
and 31 minutes, his second a penalty. After Ross MacPherson saw red for two
yellows in the space of two minutes midway through the second half Kevin Duguid
(71) put ten man Forres back in the game before Jordan Leyden clinched it 78
minutes.

Brora Rangers continued their climb up the table thanks to Dale
Gillespie's 53rd minute penalty, the only goal in the game against
Huntly at Dudgeon Park. It followed a controversial incident when Brora's
Steven Mackay appeared to foul keeper Shaun Barney and Mike Clark was red
carded for hand ball on the goal line.

There were spot kicks too at Grant Street. Graeme Watt gave
Deveronvale a 7th minute lead which they held until Alan Pollock's
penalty levelled for Clachnacuddin 7 minutes after the break. Scott Fraser's spot
kick after Chris Ross fouled Craig Cowie
on 65 minutes proved to be Vale's winner.

The fastest goal of the afternoon came at Station Park where
Connor Gethins found the net for Nairn County after just 50 seconds. Wayne
Mackintosh added a second before Gethins went on to complete his hat trick.
County's 4-0 win gives them the best points per game ratio though they have 3
or 4 games to catch up on the pace setters. Luckless Turriff United played the
second half with ten men after Darren MacAllister was sent off just before the
break.

Lossiemouth's Gary MacDonald deflected the ball into his own
net after 17 minutes to put Inverurie Locos on track at Grant Park. Ross
Archibald soon equalised but veteran Andy Low restored the Locos' lead from the
spot before goals early and late in the second half from Stuart Mackay and
Jamie Michie completed a comfortable 4-1 win.

It was 10 v 10 at Kynoch Park after Graham Lonie (Keith) and
David Robertson (Strathspey Thistle) were red carded for a 39th
minute clash. Gavin Chalmers had given the visitors a 5th minute lead
only for Andy Anderson and Cammie Keith to put the Maroons 2-1 up. Keith sealed
a 5-1 win in style with late goals from Jonathan Smith, Dean Donaldson and
Cammie's second.

Fraserburgh beat Rothes by the same score. Bryan Hay and
Ryan Christie (penalty) gave the Broch a two goal interval lead. Sean McIntosh pulled
one back for the Speysiders after 48 minutes before Graham Johnston, Scott
Barbour and Willie West made it safe for the home side.

The exception to these maybe predictable wins was a high
scoring game at Victotia Park where bottom of the table Fort William fought
back earn a 3-3 draw with Buckie Thistle. Zander Sutherland and Donnie Munro
gave the Jags a 2-0 lead, David Forbes cut the deficit after 33 minutes and
Andy Martin made it all square after 77 minutes only for Lewis MacKinnon to
immediately restore Buckie's advantage. Fort substitute Iain MacLellan netted a
last minute equaliser to snatch a point which doubles his team's tally.
