Highland League & Scottish Cup 2nd Round round-up
Saturday October 22nd
Scorries pay the penalty with Scottish Cup exit
Academy's
Scottish Cup campaign is over for another season after they were edged out 1-0
by Keith in a scrappy second-round tie in front of a 500 crowd at Harmsworth
Park.
The
decisive moment came after 32 minutes when Cammy Keith tucked away a spot-kick
after Dean Donaldson had been flattened in the box by Craig Shearer.
Both sides
struggled to cope with the strong south-easterly wind and clear-cut chances
were few and far between.
Academy did
have a few near things – a header from Shearer that flew just wide, a powerful
effort by Davie Allan that was parried away by Keith keeper Andy Shearer, both
in the first half, and a shot from Stewart Ross in the dying stages that
slipped agonisingly wide.
Keith had
threatened with shots from Jonathan Smith and Cammy Keith and a header by
Donaldson prior to the penalty incident.
Academy,
who had Martin Gunn carried off with an ankle injury, spent most of the second
half camped in the Maroons' half. However, the visitors defended resolutely to
secure their place in round three.
Deveronvale
were the toast of the Highland League sides in cup action at the weekend as
they stormed to a 4-0 victory over Berwick Rangers at Princess Royal Park.
Kris Duncan
set the Banffers on their way with an overhead kick after 18 minutes, with
Scott Fraser heading home the second on the half-hour mark.
Chris
Blackhall nodded in number three midway through the second half and there was
no way back for the Third Division outfit when they had Stephen Thomson sent
off. Mike McKenzie completed the scoring from the penalty spot in the 73rd
minute.
Clach and
Inverurie Locos will have to try again this weekend after drawing 1-1 at Grant
Street Park. Mark Dougal put the Lilywhites ahead just before the break but
John Maitland headed home the equaliser with 20 minutes to go.
Fraserburgh
also face a replay after they fought out a goalless draw with Elgin City at
Bellslea Park. Elgin finished the game with 10 men after David Niven was
red-carded.
Cove Rangers
suffered a stoppage-time knockout after battling back from two down in their
tie at Vale of Leithen.
Goals from
Scott Moffat and Jordan Hall had put the home side in the driving seat, but
Richie Singer pulled one back and Kevin Webster appeared to have earned a
replay for Cove when he made it 2-2 in the 90th minute. However, John Ferguson
sealed victory for Vale of Leithen deep in stoppage time.
Huntly were
beaten 3-0 at home by Queen's Park, while Nairn County lost 2-0 at
Peterhead. Golspie's trip to the Borders ended in a 5-2 defeat to Gala
Fairydean.
There was a
dramatic conclusion to Buckie Thistle's tie against East Stirlingshire at
Ochilview on Sunday as the home side had two players red-carded and Zander
Sutherland missed the chance to seal the Jags' place in round two when his
stoppage-time penalty was saved. It finished 1-1 after Andrew Stirling's strike
for the Third Division side was cancelled out by a Michael Hunter own goal.
Other
Scottish Cup second-round results: Alloa Athletic 2, Annan Athletic 2;
Auchinleck Talbot 8, Threave Rovers 1; Bo'ness Utd 2, Whitehill Welfare 1;
Culter 0, Spartans 2; Edinburgh City 0, Irvine Meadow 1; Montrose 2, Clyde 1;
Wigtown and Bladnoch 0, Stranraer 9.
There were
two games in the Highland League on Saturday.
First-half
goals by Kevin Duguid and Neil Whyte were enough to give Forres Mechanics a 2-0
win against Formartine United at North Lodge Park – a result that allowed the
Can-Cans to leapfrog Nairn into top spot.
Brora
Rangers picked up a much-needed three points when they came from behind to beat
Strathspey Thistle 2-1 at Dudgeon Park. Craig Rothney gave the Grantown Jags an
early lead but Steven Ross levelled for Brora just before half-time and Stuart
Golabek netted a penalty late on.
