With only 90 seconds of the second half played Academy almost levelled the scores. Gunn split the Cove defence with an inch-perfect pass threading the ball to Cunningham who ran through onto keeper Windrum but his shot from 12 yards out went agonisingly past the post.
Less than a minute later Cove struck the sucker-punch. Webster crossed into the box and Johnston ran onto it and stroked it home into the bottom corner.
3 – 1
Coves 4th came just three minutes later. Stephen cut in from the left and drilled the ball low past MacMillan's left hand.
4 – 1
Cove went nap with just over an hour gone, Livingstone executing the perfect free-kick which almost burst the back of the net.
5 – 1
Reid took the place of Cove's star player Webster and within three minute of being on the park he wrapped the scoring up. He drove down the Academy right wing and fired a swerving right foot shot into the net.
6 -1
Academy kept fighting and had a few good chances before the full-time whistle with Gunn and Cunningham both coming close, but Cove managed to shut-up shop and no further goals were added to the score-card.
Full time 6 – 1
So a disappointment for Academy but this was always going to be a tough game as a league opener. Next week sees the continuation of a really tough run of opening games as the boys make another long trip to Fraserburgh.
