On the quart-hour Andrew MacLeod threaded a great ball from
deep within his own half through the middle of the Lossiemouth defence, to send
Bryan McKiddie down the right hand wing. He delivered a perfect cross for Gary
Weir, and from the left hand corner of the penalty box Weir shaved the outside
of Masterton’s left hand post.

The first goal of the game came in the 18^th
minute. Gary Weir did brilliantly at the right hand corner flag to turn and twist to
beat two Lossiemouth defenders that were giving him some close attention, and
he drilled the ball across goal for Richard Macadie to fire home with a right
foot shot. 

1 – 0

A few minutes later and Academy went on the attack down the
opposite wing, Gary Manson making the run before passing to Macadie and Steven
Dixon did well to get something on Macadie’s shot to turn it for a corner. 

Academy’s second goal though was not too much longer in the
coming, as Weir did well down the left hand wing, sucking in two
Lossiemouth defenders before squaring to Gary Manson in the middle of the box. Gary didn’t seem to
connect cleanly with the ball, but it was enough to evade Masterton and snuck
into the right hand corner of his net.

Academy at this stage were playing some really good
football, and 2 minutes after their second goal Bryan McKiddie again terrorised
the Lossiemouth defence with another run up the right wing, before passing
inside to Shaun Sinclair who fired a good cross into the Lossiemouth box for
Gary Farquhar to get a header on target that Masterton saved.

A minute later and it was McKiddie, who was growing in confidence with every touch, once more down the right
driving at the Lossie back line. He managed to keep going and dribbled his way
into the Lossie penalty box before having a shot that Gary Youngson managed to
turn for a corner. Macadie took the corner kick that fell for Farquhar at the
edge of the box but he couldn’t keep his shot down and it went over
the top of goal. 

With just over a half hour gone Academy were creating the
most of the chances, and this time McKiddie supplied another good cross from
the right which Manson got on the end off and he forced another save from
Masterton, who did well to hold onto the ball with players around him.

3 minutes later it was Manson down the left that supplied
the ammunition, crossing to Gary Farquhar at the back post. He took it down
well, but the ball seemed to take a weird bounce just as he pulled the trigger,
and it went wide of Mastertons left post from only 4 yards out. 

That was followed by an Alan Sinclair attempt from 35 yards
that he hit on the run, this one shaving the outside of Masterton’s right hand
post.

Lossies best chance of the half came in the 35^th
minute. There was hesitation in the Academy defence when More seemed to be
caught off his line by a Craig Morrison shot. He managed to parry it out
but it fell to Stuart Strathdee and with players falling all around the ball More
managed to smother Strathdee’s shot on goal. 

Academy then went on to score a crucial goal to go 3 ahead.
Weir, Manson, and Macadie combined with some really good crisp passing to cut
through the Lossie defence where Macadie supplied the final pass to Weir and he
slotted home with a cool finish from 6 yards out.

Half time 3 –  0

Lossiemouth made the first change of the game taking on Sean
McIntosh for Stuart Strathdee. 

The second half started a bit scrappily with the wind
freshening and that seemed to affect both teams.  It was 10 minutes before the first attempt on
goal when McKiddie skinned David Blackhall down the wing, drove in on goal but
Masterton saved his shot. The ball came back out for Weir who had a first-time
shot, but Masterton again saved the day blocking with his feet.

On the hour Academy won a free-kick 30 yards from goal. Gary
Farquhar took it floating the ball into the box for Weir to head across goal
and Craig Shearer just failed to connect at the back post. 

Lossiemouth to their credit kept plugging away and a minute
later they had another good chance to pull one back. Andrew MacLeod dithered in
defence with the ball at feet, and substitute McIntosh stole it from him, ran
in on goal but was denied by More who made a great save with his feet.

Weir sealed the game with his second goal in the 63^rd
minute. It came from a Gary Manson shot that he sliced and it went wide of goal
but stayed in play and McKiddie did well to collect it at the back post. He
squared to Weir in the middle of the box and he again showed a cool head to
burry the ball in Masterton’s net.

More heartache for Lossie in the 76^th minute as
they came so close yet again to pulling one back. Craig Morrison out-jumping
the Academy defence to get a header on goal that beat More, but it hit off the
bottom of his left hand post, and ran back across the goal-line with no takers
on hand to knock it home.

2 minutes later the woodwork again came into play this time
denying Gary Weir his second hat-trick in a week, as his 20 yard shot smacked
off the Lossiemouth post. 

The game surged back into the Academy half, and Lossie had
two half-chances in the space of as many minutes. The first came from a
Morrison shot that went just wide of target, and that was followed by a
Blackhall 25 yard free-kick that once more went just wide of the upright.

The best goal of the game came with 5 minutes left
of play. Gary Manson took an Academy free-kick about 30 yards from goal. He
rolled it forward to Macadie who squared for Gary Farquhar and he hit as crisp
a drive from about 28 yards out as you are likely to see into the top right hand corner of Masterton’s
net. This one would be a contender for any goal of the season award!

“We were absolutely delighted with the performance of our
team. We carried on where we left off on Tuesday night against Brora. We had to
work hard in the first 20 minutes to break down the Lossie defence, but once we
got our first goal we were fairly comfortable. We totally dominated the game,
we scored 5 and we could have had a few more. Gary Weir has really been on fire
with 5 goals in 2 games.

We had a few players missing and some others will be missing
for the next few games so it was great to see the contribution from young Bryan
McKiddie who was immense all over the park. Craig Shearer came back into the
team and he will have an important role for the next few games. It is also good
to see Alan Sinclair back. He is working hard on his fitness and improving all
the time.

Tommy explained his teams defeat saying “We had players
missing today, two injured, two working, two on holiday, and two at a wedding,
so we fielded a few youngsters. We missed a few chances in the first half
including  a particularly good one with
the score at 2 – 0. If we had gone in 2 – 1 down at half time we might have
made a game of it. All credit to Wick for playing so well to win the game.”
