Academy reclaim 11th place today with a draw against Charlie Duncan’s Fraserburgh.
Academy started the game really well and created their first chance with 9 minutes played. David Cowie made good ground up the right wing and supplied a cross for Richard Macadie. Macadie laid it off for Martin Gunn who had a right foot shot at goal, but keeper Gordon saved it with his feet.
3 minutes later and Academy created another good chance. Alex Lamb heading the ball across the edge of the Fraserburgh penalty box for Martin Gunn to collect on the half-volley, but his shot went high of goal.
It was 14 minutes before Fraserburgh had any sort of attempt at the Wick goal, Graham Johnston having a long-range pop that More collected without any real pressure.
2 minutes later and Academy had a great chance to take the lead. Gary Farquhar took a free-kick 30 yards from goal and the Broch keeper Gordon made a full stretch diving save to palm it around his post for a corner. From the corner David Mowat steamed in at the back post but his thundering header went just high of the Fraserburgh cross-bar.
The Academy pressure eventually paid off with a goal in the 19th minute. Richard Macadie split the Fraserburgh defence from about the half-way line with a piercing through ball. Martin Gunn beat the off-side trap and ran in on goal with keeper Gordon coming to meet him. Gunn hit a left foot shot from just outside the Fraserburgh box that went around Gordon, hit the inside of the right post and nestled into the bottom of the net.
1 – 0
The only remaining action of the half came just before the half-hour when Craig Shearer gave away a free-kick about 30 yards from the Academy goal. Steven Main took the free-kick, but his attempt went just wide of Mores right hand post.
Half Time 1 – 0
Fraserburgh started the better in the second half, and they got their equalizer in the 53rd minute. They won a dubious free-kick that was floated into the back post for Willie West to get a free header on goal, and he buried it leaving More with no chance.
1 – 1
The game was stopped for 4 minutes or so just on the hour when Shaun Sinclair and Allan Hale had a clash of heads in the Academy box. After medical attention Hale was taken off on a stretcher and he was replaced by Jamie Buchan.
Fraserburgh were starting to have the bulk of the position as the second half wore on, and in 64 minutes Steven Main fired in a free-kick that everyone missed and it bounce just past Mores right hand post.
The remaining quarter of the game was punctuated by substitutes from both side, but no more real goal-mouth attempts, and even with 5 minutes of extra time neither side could find a winner.
Full Time 1 – 1
So this really was a game of two halves. Academy were much the better team in the first period, and with the chances they had they probably should have been more goals in front going in for the half-time break. Fraserburgh however turned it around in the second half and managed to earn a draw.
Academy have one game left this season, home to Fort William on the 19th May, and they need a point to hit the 30 point mark. A win would see them level with Rothes, but we’ll need to put about 7 goals past the Fort if we are to over-take Rothes for 10th place.
