This was Kevin Wills first trip to Wick as the Locos manager, and by the end of the 90 minutes he really knew his boys had been in a game, and then some! Wick were desperately unlucky not to take something out of the match, but when you gift a team of Inveruries calibre with two really soft goals you normally pay the price, and that’s what happened today.

The game opened with two goals within the first 5 minutes. Academy are making a habit of scoring against Invururie with less than 5 minutes on the clock, as they did so again today for the second time this season. Martin Gunn played a long ball to the edge of the Inverurie penalty box. Gary Weir and Richard Macadie combined well, before Richard squared the ball to Weir, and he slotted home under the body of Stewart Gray from 6 yards out.

1 – 0

A minute later and a high ball was pumped into the Academy box by Neil Gauld. James More rose to collect, under a little pressure from a few of the Locos strikers, but he unfortunately dropped the ball and it trundled over the line for an own goal.

1 – 1

In the 13th minute chances then fell at both ends of the ground. Martin Gunn pinged a 50 yard cross-field pass onto the shoe-laces of Richard Macadie, but unfortunately Richard couldn’t control the ball, or he would have been in on goal. Then at the other end Richard Shand played Kenny Coull through the middle of the Academy defence and he scored, sliding the ball under the body of More from 15 yards out.

1 – 2

With 16 minutes on the clock Richard Macadie drove down-field with some excellent wing-play, and squared the ball for Gary Farquhar. Gary took it on the volley just on the edge of the Locos penalty area, but his shot whistled inches past Grays right hand post.

With play raging from one end of the park to another, the next chance for Academy came in the 23rd minute when we were awarded a free-kick about 35 yards from goal. Gary Farquhar played the ball into the Locos box where it fell to Gary Weir, but his attempt on the half-volley went high over goal.

4 minutes later and Barry Somers got a free header on goal but James saved well down low to his left hand post.

The last real chance of the half fell to Academy. David Mowat won a good tackle in the middle of the park and he drove forward with the ball before finally crossing for Richard Macadie, but Richards header went just over the top of the Locos cross-bar.

Half Time 1 – 2

Academy started the second half at real pace, and within a minute Gary Farquhar did well on the edge of the Locos box to make room for a shot on goal that keeper Gray saved down to his left post.

This was followed by a good penetrating run up the left wing by Gary Manson and his cross\shot cannoned back off the Locos right hand post.

Academy were applying constant pressure on the Locos, and as Inverurie started to sit deeper and deeper defending their lead Academy almost equalised. Gary Farquhar again found himself in a shooting position within the Locos penalty area, but his goal-bound shot flicked off Richard Shand for a corner kick.

This was Academys best spell of the game, and with the Locos defence looking really shaky, it was Gary Farquhar again in the 53rd minute that caused them problems. This time he marched through the middle of the park with the ball, and with keeper Gray well of his line Gary chipped him from about 40 yards out, but his attempt went just over the Locos cross-bar.

With an hour gone Peter made two positive changes in an attempt to square the game. Mark Makhouli came on for Gary Weir, and David Cowie for Graeme Reid.

Farquhar was having a really good game, and 3 minutes after the substitutions were made he dribbled his way past 3 Locos defenders and was bundled down in the Locos box to the cries of a penalty from the Academy supporters. Referee Baxter though was having none of it, and probably rightly so, as there wasn’t much contact made.

David Cowie was starting to give Academy good width down the right hand side, and in the 68th minute he did well to force a corner. The resulting corner was hoofed up-field by the Locos defence, and you could see they really were holding on at this stage. Academy played the ball straight back to them, and Farquhar again found himself in a shooting position at the edge of the Locos box. Unfortunately Gary screwed his shot wide of goal.

Academys equaliser finally came in the 78th minute. Good work again from David Cowie down the wing, and his cross went ping-pong between defenders in the Locos box, before finally falling to Craig Shearer. Craig slipped over but still managed to get a shot on goal from 8 yards out and it found it’s way past Grays right hand. This was Craig’s 200th league appearance for the club today, so it was very apt that he should score.

2 – 2

With Academy right back in the game, and looking the far better side in the second half, they gifted the Locos their winner in the 82nd minute. Under no pressure in his own box, Stewart Ross squared a cushioned header straight to the feet of Jamie Watt, and the substitute fired home past a helpless James from close range.

2 – 3

With a minute of the game left Academy had one last chance to square the game. They won a free-kick about 25 yards from goal, but Gary Farquhars attempt went straight through the Locos wall and just wide of Grays right hand post, much to the relief of the Locos players and management team.

Full Time 2 – 3

So lots of good play by Academy today, and a tough one to take, as they deserved something out of the game. Two soft goals contributed to their down-fall, but all of the players should hold their heads high based on the performance they gave.
