The name in the draw of the Scottish cup proper, plus a semi-final of the SQC, awaits the winner of this game, so a lot at stake for both sides.
Just kicked off on a glorious sunny day at Victoria Park, 0 – 0.
A 90 mile an hour start by both sides, with the game starting at break-neck speed.
11 mins and Buckie take the lead. No 8 Donnie Munro is played through the middle of the Academy defence, and he slots home low past James.
0 – 1
2 mins later and the ball drops to Gary Weir in the Buckie box. He takes it on the half-volley and scores from 8 yards out, game on!!
1 – 1
30 mins gone and the score is still 1 -1. Wick have had two great chances with the ball being cleared off the Buckie line, and Gary Weir just missing a free header in front of goal. If he had connected with anything at all on it we would have scored.
Buckie are penetrating well and James has had a couple of great saves.
Referee Northcroft blows for half-time with no further scoring. Honours even in goals scored, but Buckie shaded the first half on the sheer number of chances they had, with James doing the business in goal yet again.
Half Time 1 – 1
Peter makes his first change with Gary Farquhar coming off for Richard Macadie.
Academy are under the cosh with Buckie throwing all they have at us.
On the hour and super-sub Macadie fires Wick in front. Stewart Ross plays a long ball from the half-way line, Macadie latches onto it and fires home. Academy are in front!!!
1 – 2
Chances for both sides. Buckie have 2 great chances to level the game, but Gary Manson has also made Main make a great save.
76 minutes and Academy are dealt a cruel blow. David Mowat [Correction] Neil Traill deflects the ball past James, who is rooted to the spot, for an OG.
2 – 2
3 minutes later and Buckie get a free-kick on the edge of the Academy box. Andy Lowe takes it and scores a cracker.
3 – 2
Wick kept trying but unfortunately just couldn’t pull it back.
Full-Time 3 – 2
So a brave attempt by Academy who went into this game as under-dogs, but can be proud of the fact that they had a real go at winning it. Buckie now have a home tie against Keith on the 14th of October in the semi-final, and their name in the draw for the Scottish Cup. Academy have come so close, but unfortunately just couldn’t make it over the finish line. Hard lines lads on what has been a great run of cup games.
