Wick Academy fell at the first hurdle in their attempt at retaining the Menzies Distribution North of Scotland Cup at Mackessack Park on Wednesday night.

Although not fully recovered from injury, Alan Farquhar, Ross Allan and Sam Mackay were in the starting line up and there was also a place for Conor Cormack from the youth team.

In the 21st minute there was a let off for Academy when Cameron Lisle's well struck low 15 yard shot deflected against Sean McCarthy's left hand post with the keeper stranded.

On 24 minutes a Sam Mackay corner was cleared only to Marc MacGregor who volleyed it first time but straight at Rothes keeper Sean Mcintosh.

Ross Allan tested the Rothes keeper with a low 24 yard free kick and McCarthy gathered a potentially tricky shot from Jack Maley just as it bounced on the 6 yard line.

The Scorries were stunned seconds before half time when Macnab retrieved a loose ball out on the Rothes right and cut in to fire the opening goal from a tight angle.

In the 70th minute Richard Macadie lobbed the keeper only for a Rothes defender to kick the ball off the line. Rothes retaliated and when Maley launched a 40 yard free kick into a crowded penalty area it bounced and struck James Pickles on the arm. Maley drilled the spot kick to McCarthy's left, having tricked the keeper into diving right.

Around 80 minutes Michael Steven slipped a pass to MacGregor on the 18 yard line but he hooked his shot just over the bar and Academy's challenge fizzled out.
