Scottish Cup Round 1 – round-up
Saturday September 14th
Six of the best as Academy march into the 2nd round
Academy and seven other Highland League teams won their William Hill Scottish Cup First Round ties.
The long journey to Coldstream from various parts of Britain did not deter between 100 and 150 Scorries fans who cheered their team to a 6-0 victory. Davie Allan netted a first half double and although the Streamers battled hard until the hour mark when a goal from Gary Weir followed by another from Sam Mackay did the job. Craig Shearer added two more late on.
North rivals Brora scraped through against Vale of Leithen at Dudgeon Park thanks to a last minute Steven Mackay goal after the visitors had 4 players sent off.
5 miles down the road Golspie went down 4-0 to Edinburgh City who had the tie sewn up with goals in the 9th and 14th minutes.
Rothes held out during a goal-less first half away to Threave Rovers but lost 3-0.
Cammy Bowden gave Turriff a half time lead at Selkirk and although the Lowland League side equalised, Gary McGowan scored twice in last quarter of an hour to give Turriff a 3-1 win.
A Scott Barbour hat-trick was the highlight of Fraserburgh's 4-0 home triumph over Civil Service Strollers. All the goals came in the second half, Willie West netting the other.
Buckie Thistle with a goal each from Lewis MacKinnon (2 minutes), Fraser Forbes (23), Chris Angus (29) and Jamie Shewan (47) racked up a four goal lead away to South of Scotland team Wigtown and Bladnoch and then had to hang on to win 4-3.
Huntly led 2-0 at home to Preston Athletic only to slump to a 4-3 defeat.
A goal in each half saw crack Junior outfit Linlithgow Rose dump Nairn County out of the tournament.
Inverurie Locos progressed comfortably 3-0 at Station Park against lowly Burntisland Shipyard thanks to two goals from Dean Donaldson (34 and 53 pen) and a 90th minute effort from sub Andrew Hunter.
Deveronvale with goals from Martin Charlesworth (22), Shawn Scott (44, 67), Graeme Rodger (49) and Graeme Watt (89) gave Clachnacuddin a 5-0 thrashing.
The other all Highland League clash produced an exciting and controversial match at Mosset Park. Lee Fraser and Neil Whyte put Forres 2-0 up but Mark Wood reduced the deficit for Keith in the 38th minute and two minutes later it was 2-2, Jonathan Smith netting a spot kick after Forres keeper clashed with Calum Dingwall while holding the ball and about to kick it up the field. Remarkably Whyte restored the Forres lead before the break and Simon Allan made it 4-2 with a 47th minute free kick. Smith's second penalty goal (handball by Ross MacPherson who was sent off) and a header from Dingwall made it 4-4 by the hour mark. Andrew MacAskill won it 5-4 for Keith and Smith scorned his chance of a penalty hat-trick by firing his third spot kick against the post.
The Fort William v Newton Stewart and Lossiemouth v Culter ties failed to produce a goal.
