Academy skipper Sam Mackay netted a
hat-trick to clinch his team's quarter-final slot in the AJG Parcels
North Cup.
North Caledonian League side Golspie shocked the
Scorries with a 9th minute goal after a blistering start by the visitors had
seen Golspie keeper Gordon MacRae save a shot from James Pickles
and two from Gary Weir while other efforts were scrambled away by an
overworked home defence.
However in their first attack Bobby
Gunn steered the ball into the Wick net from 10 yards.
Wick lost their rhythm for a spell and Alan
Larnach almost scored a second for Golspie, lobbing keeper James More only for
Michael Steven to clear off the line.
The Highland League side enjoyed a lucky break
for their 38th minute equaliser when Mackay's 35 yard shot struck a
defender's shoulder and looped into the top corner of the net.
Half time – 1 – 1
The second half was mainly one way traffic but
Wick found it hard to break down the Golspie rearguard. A Stevie Cunningham
drive on the hour hit the base of the post and when Mackay took a 65th minute
penalty after handball by Adam Sutherland, keeper MacRae dived to his right to
save. Within 2 minutes Mackay redeemed his reputation when his glancing back
post header from Richard Macadie's right wing cross gave Wick a 2-1 lead.
Substitute Bryan McKiddie had a shot saved at
the base of the post and MacRae also faced an aerial bombardment from free
kicks and corners.
After Weir was tripped in the 78th minute Stevie
Cunningham took the spot kick and again MacRae dived right to save. In the 87th
minute Mackay tapped in a Weir pass at close range to complete the scoring.
Full time – 1 – 3
