Weir at the double as Academy move up the table
Academy moved up to joint third place in the Highland
League, a point behind the leaders, after a convincing 4-0 away victory over
Rothes. Gary Weir struck twice and there was a goal apiece for Richard Macadie
and Sam Mackay as the Scorries continued where they had left off in the 3-0
midweek triumph against Brora Rangers in the North of Scotland Cup semi-final.
Academy dominated the opening exchanges at Mackessack Park
but it took until the stroke of half-time for the breakthrough to come. A shot
by Macadie was blocked but Weir latched on to it and fired the ball under
keeper Greg Sim.
The Scorries doubled their lead on 69 minutes when James
Pickles threaded the ball through the Rothes defence to Macadie, who produced a
typically cool finish.
Within a minute it was 3-0 as Mackay hammered the ball home
from the edge of the box after a Weir effort had been blocked.
Weir got his second of the afternoon after 81 minutes,
adding the finishing touch after some wonderful build-up play by Mackay and
Stevie Cunningham.
Academy are now the highest-scoring side in the league, with
18 goals from their opening six fixtures, and successive clean sheets in cup
and league matches will give them added confidence going into this Saturday's
eagerly awaited home game against Fraserburgh.
They will be taking nothing for granted, however, knowing
that the Broch were the last visiting team to win a league match at Harmsworth
Park. That was almost a year ago, on October 8th 2011.
Nairn County took over top spot after an emphatic 6-0
victory over Davie Kirkwood's Brora Rangers at Station Park. Andrew Neill gave
Nairn a fifth-minute lead and Gregg Main doubled their advantage on 17 minutes
with a superb free kick. Four minutes later it was 3-0 as Gregg's brother Glenn
Main found the net after being put through one-on-one with keeper Robbie
Taylor. Neill nodded home his second goal of the game 10 minutes after the
break, Conor Gethins lobbed in number five in the 70th minute, and a Michael
Morrison header completed the rout with a minute to go after Brora's Kyle
MacLean had been sent off for a second bookable offence.
There was a dramatic finale at Grant Street Park as Buckie
Thistle's David MacRae grabbed a last-gasp winner after Clach had battled back
from two goals down. Zander Sutherland put the Jags ahead after four minutes
and Jamie Shewan increased their lead with a header midway through the first
half.
Clach reduced the deficit through Graham Tatters on 83
minutes and Gordon Morrison levelled things up with two minutes of the 90
remaining. However, MacRae struck deep in stoppage time to seal a 3-2 victory
for Buckie.
A double from Andrzej-Slawomir Kleczkowski helped Huntly to
a 2-1 victory over Deveronvale at Princess Royal Park. The Polish striker
opened the scoring after 16 minutes and added his second with a couple of
minutes left. Vale's Graeme Rodger got a consolation goal in injury time.
swept to an impressive 3-0 win against Inverurie Locos at The Haughs. Harris's
first was a well-taken free kick after 17 minutes and he doubled his tally five
minutes later. He completed his treble just after the hour mark
