Highland League & Scottish Cup 1st Round round-up

Saturday September 24th
Academy on cloud nine after record win

Academy racked up their biggest ever Scottish Cup win with a
9-1 demolition of Coldstream in the first round of the William Hill Scottish
Cup.

It was the first time since joining the Highland League 17
years ago that the Scorries had scored nine in a game, and the first time two
Wick players had netted trebles in the same match.

Gary Weir and Stevie Cunningham were the hat-trick heroes,
with Richard Macadie, David Allan and Craig Shearer getting the others in front
of a bumper Harmsworth crowd.

Macadie opened the scoring with a tap-in after 28 minutes,
and three minutes later Academy doubled their advantage when Allan turned
neatly and smashed the ball into the net.

The Streamers reduced the deficit in the 37th minute through
Michael Allan and that was how it stood at the interval.

Weir made it 3-1 in the 55th minute when he
scored from the spot after Allan had been fouled by keeper Mark Walters.

Shearer extended the lead after 61 minutes before Academy
were awarded another penalty when Walters again brought down Allan. This time,
however, the keeper saved Weir's spot-kick.

The Scorries' fifth goal was delayed only until the 65th
minute when Cunningham dinked the ball over Walters. Cunningham got his second
from close range four minutes later and completed his hat-trick after 76
minutes with another simple finish.

Two minutes later Weir netted from the edge of the box and
he got his third when he sent a curling shot beyond Walters with eight minutes
left.

Elsewhere there were wins for Inverurie Locos, Huntly, Cove
Rangers, Fraserburgh, Nairn County, Keith and Clachnacuddin, while Forres
Mechanics forced a replay with Irvine Meadow.

Locos had a superb 6-1 away win triumph over Dalbeattie
Star. Marc Young struck twice for Inverurie, with Craig Ross and Clark Bain
also on target before substitutes Neil McLean and Neil Gauld added their names
to the scoresheet.

Huntly won by the same margin in their home tie against
Newton Stewart. Paul McCarthy, Michael Fyfe, Adam Naismith, Russell Guild, Alex
Thoirs and David Booth got the goals for the Christie Park side.

Daniel Park and Danny Milne helped themselves to two each as
Cove swept to a 4-0 win against Glasgow University at Garscube.

Ryan Christie's injury-time goal gave Fraserburgh a 4-3
victory over Civil Service Strollers at Bellslea. Peter Alexander Bruce had
earlier netted a double for the Broch, with Allan Hale also on the mark.

Nairn came from behind to beat Selkirk 2-1 at Station Park,
Conor Gethins and Steven Mackay getting the goals for Les Fridge's men.

Strikes from Dean Donaldson and Stuart Walker were enough to
give Keith a 2-0 away win against St Cuthbert Wanderers.

Clach were 3-0 winners over Rothes in the all-HFL tie at
Mackessack Park courtesy of Colin Williamson, Brian Macleod and Paul Brindle.

A late equaliser by Gary Tweedie and a penalty save from
Stewart Gray kept Forres in the tournament as their clash with Irvine Meadow
ended all square at 2-2.

Brora Rangers went down 3-0 to Edinburgh City at Meadowbank
Stadium, while Lossiemouth were edged out 2-1 by Auchinleck Talbot in a closely
contested tie at Grant Park.

Other first-round results: Culter 4, Burntisland Shipyard 0;
Edinburgh University 0, Whitehill Welfare 3; Gala Fairydean 8, Hawick Royal Albert
1; Vale of Leithen 1, Girvan 0; Wigtown & Bladnoch 2, Preston Athletic 0.

Saturday's solitary HFL fixture saw Formartine United ease
to a 5-1 victory over Strathspey Thistle at North Lodge Park. Mateusz Bobrowski
gave the Grantown Jags a surprise lead but the home side responded with a
penalty from Michael McGinlay to make it 1-1 half-time.

McGinlay added his second of the afternoon to put Formartine
in front, with Barrie Stephen also weighing in with a double either side of a
headed goal from Stuart Soane.
