Academy scorned several goalscoring opportunities in the first
hour, and reduced to ten men after the sending off of Gary Manson for a second
yellow card, were punished by an eager Rothes outfit during the last half hour,
the Speysiders striker Richard Forsyth completing a hat trick.
The visitors shook off any lethargy following a day at work
and a five hour bus journey to make the early running. David Allan raced
through the middle to test Speysiders keeper Ricky Horne with a low shot before
Richard Macadie too showed the home defence a clean pair of heels only to fire
over the bar.
On the quarter hour mark Gary Weir was unable to convert a
slack clearance from a corner and then Alan Farquhar's close range effort was
blocked by Horne and scrambled clear.
Wick keeper had no chance when in the first significant
Rothes attack Forsyth broke clear and steered the ball low into the net.
Horne caught a Weir free kick before at the other end
Forsyth and then Lewis Robertson had 20 yard efforts saved by Bokas. Gary
Manson slipped behind the home defence and fired the ball low on target, Horne
diving to his left to prevent an equaliser.
Three minutes before the break Franny More crossed from the
left and Forsyth jumped highest at the back post to head his second goal.
Half Time 2 – 0
Stevie Cunningham cut the deficit when he drilled the ball
low past Horne five minutes into the
second half but before the Scorries could take their fight back a stage further
referee Graham Beaton – remember him from the Buckie game? – made a big impact
on the game. Having booked Manson following a first half foul he again produced
the yellow card for a tackle by the left back and Wick were reduced to ten men.
Rothes made their numerical advantage count when Forsyth
completed his hat trick with a header immediately followed by a goal from s
solo run by More.
Ashley Young and substitute Chris Duncan scored to complete
the rout.
