displayed some great skills, driving up the left wing before delivering an inch-perfect cross off the outside of the
boot into the heart of the Academy box where Paul Urquhart smashed it past a
helpless More from 10 yards out.
0 – 2
With 27 minutes played More
claimed a high ball, but didn’t manage to catch it cleanly and it fell to Mark
Cowie but he blasted over the top of goal from only 10 yards out.
A minute later and Chisholm again
drove at the Academy defence, this time getting a shot on target from the left
hand side of the penalty area, but More was up to it and made a good save.
It didn’t take the Vale much
longer however to increase their lead. A slack pass 30 yards from goal by Gary
Farquhar gifted the ball to Mackenzie who played in Michael Ewen. The Academy
defence had their hands up looking for an off-side decision, but the assistants
flag stayed down and Ewen rounded More and fired home.
0 – 3
Half Time 0 – 3
10 minutes after the restart
Academy had their fist chance of the game. Good work by Gary Farquhar played
Martin Gunn into the middle of the Vale box, but he screwed his shot wide of
Blanchard’s left hand post.
A flurry of substitutions on the
hour mark saw the influential MacKenzie going off for John Coutts, and Academy
changed things around taking off McKiddie and Farquhar for Stuart Sinclair and
the experienced campaigner John Seaton.
Good defending by Andrew MacLeod
denied Ewen at the back post as he turned his attempt wide for a corner kick.
Allan Stephen got his head to the resulting corner, but directed it straight into
the welcoming hands of More.
There was 68 minutes on the clock
before Academy got their first attempt on target. Gary Weir broken into the box
shrugging of the attentions of most of the Vale back-line, but he could only
turn and get a toe-poke on the ball and Blanchard smothered to clear the
danger.
Vale got their 4th of
the game in the 74th minute. Fraser Bremner crossed the ball from
the left and Mark Chisholm rose un-marked to power his header into the net.
0 – 4
Vale were in total control of the
game by this stage, and Academy were limited to the odd long-shot at goal,
typified by a 30 yard drive from Craig Shearer that just whistled over the top
of Blanchard’s cross-bar. That was followed by a 25 yard drive from Manson that
went straight into the mid-drift of Blanchard.
Vale went nap with 8 minutes of
play left. Steven Dolan had a crack from 25 yards that took a nick off Alan
Sinclair and flashed past an out-stretched More into the top corner.
0 – 5
The last action of the game saw
Macadie having two attempts to pull a consolation back for the Scorries. His
first attempt was a shot from the left hand side of the Vale penalty area that
brushed off Blanchard’s left hand post, and his second attempt forced a good
save from Blanchard as he got down well to turn the shot around his post.
Final Score 0 – 5
So a disappointing display from
Academy today, but Vale march on into the next round. Academy have a free
weekend next week, and are then away, in what won’t be an easy game, to Fort
William on league duty on the 13th of October.
