Wick Academy completed their pre-season preparation tonight with an encouraging display against Inverness Caledonian Thistle U119’s. The pitch looked in great condition and was damp with a few showers of rain. This made for an entertaining game with the good crisp passing by both teams and the ball zipping off the surface.

Academy started the game on the attack and Richard Macadie made good ground up the right wing but with players queuing up in the middle his pass took a nick off Ally MacDonald and the threat fizzled out.

With 7 minutes gone however Academy took the lead. Gary Weir was sent through the middle on the end of a high ball which he took down well, controlled and slotted past keeper Watt.

1 – 0

Academy’s next attack came straight from the kick-off when young Alan Farquhar stormed up the left wing and sent in a good crossed ball, but Weir couldn’t collect it and the danger was cleared by Guy Kerr.

Academy kept up the pressure and were playing some good football with good position and accurate passes. They forced two corners in the space of a minute, the second falling at the edge of the box fo Gary Farquhar, but he screwed his shot wide of target.

With a quarter hour played Gary Farquhar played a good through ball to Weir, who turned the last defender twice before passing him, but the ball skidded off the slippery surface through to the safe hands of keeper Watt.

Academy did have the ball in the net again in the 27th minute, but Gary Manson’s attempt was chalked off for off-side.
4 minutes later and Gary Farquhar had a 30 yard attempt comfortably saved by keeper Watt.

Caley’s equaliser came from a penalty kick in the 34th minute. MacDonald found himself in the box sandwiched between Shaun Sinclair and Richard Macadie, and when contact was made by Sinclair and MacDonald went to ground referee Fraser pointed to the spot. Jamie Cromar took the penalty, which was Caleys first real attempt on goal, and sent More the wrong way, slotting the ball into the right hand corner of the net.

1 – 1

With the half drawing to an end Alan Farquhar had a decent crack at goal from 25 yards out that Watt comfortably saved, and at the other end More was called into action for his first real save of the game, making a good stop from a Ian Penwright header.

Half time 1 – 1

Caley started the second half on the attack, and got into a good position within two minutes of the re-start when Shaun Sinclair fouled Jamie Cromar on the edge of the Academy box. Caley however squandered the chance when Jake Ingles squared the free-kick to Dale Gillespie, and Gillespie fired his attempt wide of Mores left hand post.

50 minutes into the game and some great passing play by Bryan McKiddie and Richard Macadie played Gary Weir in on goal and he had a good attempt that keeper Watt did well to save down to his left hand post, turning the ball around for a corner-kick.

2 minutes later and Andrew MacLeod had a charge out of defence and got his right foot on the end of a cleared ball sending a 40 yard thunder-bolt in on goal and it just shaved Watts right hand post.

Caley made a few changes at this point bringing off Cromar for Daniel Park, and Sam Ward for Gavin Morrson.

2 minutes later Academy made their first changes with Shaun Sinclair exchanged for Alan Sinclair and Bryan McKiddie replaced with Gavin Henderson.

With an hour gone Caley had two good attempts on goal. Substitute Morrison had the first with a 25 yard attempt that More held onto with safe hands and almost immediately after Dale Gillespie had a similar range attempt but he couldn’t curl the ball enough to beat More.

Academy nearly took the lead in the 67th minute when a good attacking move by Alan Farquhar was broken up by Struan Woodhouse, and Stuart Ross collected the cleared ball and his 20 yard shot clipped the top of the Caley cross-bar.

Young keeper Graeme Williamson was given the last 20 minutes of the game, replacing James More and he was called into action shortly after coming on when Dale Gillespie had a crack from the edge of the box that he held well as it skidded off the wet surface.

The remainder of the game was punctuated by further substitutes by both sides but neither team could find the killer goal to win the game.

Full Time 1 – 1

So a very good run-out for the boys, and ideal preparation for next Tuesday nights cup game against Brora. There were plenty of encouraging signs with some excellent passing movement and the team worked hard in closing the young ICT players down when they had position.
