Archive Material – Season 1995-96

1995

4th June – Club News.
Derek Bremner, Jacky Gunn, Alec Miller and Colin Campbell all travelled to Glasgow to obtain seats for the new stands at The Harmsworth Park, from Rangers FC. After some hard work of filling a “Norforst” lorry with the new seats, they were given a guided tour of Ibrox Stadium and met boss Walter Smith.

23rd July – Pre-Season friendly against Falkirk. Wick get beat 0 – 3.

25th July – Norforst Challenge Cup.
A fairly competitive match against the Premier League team. With the match against Falkirk being only 48 hours earlier it was perhaps unrealistic to expect Academy to rise to the occasion against Hibernian. A crowd of 1,800 enjoyed the skills of Darren Jackson and his teammates after the cup. Result 6-0 Hibernian.

5th August – First game of the season, away to Keith. Alan Murray scores 1st goal of the season, but team loses 2-1. The travelling supporters, Maree, Carla and all performed the “Academy Reeve” for the first time in public. To say the home support was out numbered and outshouted would be an understatement of the century when the “Scorrie Choir” gave an unopposed rendition of “We’ve got the whole stand to ourselves”.

12th August – Highland League Cup Section 4.
Was not glorious for Academy as we get hammered 6-1 at home to Fort William.

15th August – Away game to Brora Rangers. Result 1-1 Draw.

19th August – Home game to Clach. 2-1 win in the last game in Highland League Cup section.

2nd September – back to league duties. Away game at Buckie. Lose 5-2.

9th September – Home game to Cove Rangers. Lose 5-1.

16th September – Another home game against Lossiemouth. Another 5-1 defeat of the Academy.

23rd September – Scottish Qualifying Cup.
Away to Keith. Lose game 2-0.
Academy sign former Ross County defender, 24 year old Gary Campbell. An experienced Highland League defender. Manager Cowie was quick to sign Campbell after losing 10 goals in last 2 games.

30th September – Away trip again, this time to Banff to play Deveronvale. Win 1-0.

7th October – Away game in Inverness against Clach. 2-2 Draw.
Alan Duff scores both goals. Manager Cowie “Staked a Steak” on the match result with J. Innes, Clach Ass. Manager.

14th October – Home to Rothes this week. 2-1 win.

21st October – Wick team manager is part of a Nigg syndicate that scooped £10,000 in the National Lottery draw. Managers son, Don Jnr was picked for a trial with Aberdeen. Local hotel “The Nethercliffe” sponsors home match against Nairn County. Win 3-1.

28th October – Leave Wick at 7.30 am for away game against Fort William. Have lunch at Inverness at 10.30 am. Come back with 3 points after 2-1 win. Academy win “Team of the Month” award.

4th November – Home game with visitors Peterhead. Result 1-1 Draw. Ex Celtic players Bobby Lennox and Stevie Chalmers attend the game.

11th November – Another home game, this time the visitors are Clach. 600 fans turned up to see Academy go 7 games undefeated. Alan Duff scores a hat-trick during near hurricane conditions, in a game Academy win 4-1. The other Scorer was Alan Murray. This result sends Wick Academy up to 7th in the league table, after only their second season in the Highland League.

18th November – Home match to Forres Mechanics. A 0-0 Draw.

Academy now up to 5th in League Table.

25th November – Home match to Deveronvale. Another win, this time 2-1, thanks to goals from Gordie MacDonald and Alan Murray.

2nd December – Academy make it 10 wins in a row as team beats Lossiemouth 2-1 in an away match. Result puts Academy forth in the table now. Excitement before leaving for match, Jim and George (not the “Beachgrove Gardeners” but our own Jim Bremner and George Cowie) chase after the Morrisons Wick – Inverness service bus, instead of waiting for the team bus. Also on the return journey our Goalie and Striker did likewise at Tain.

9th December – Away again to Elgin City. Lose in a big way 4-0.

16th December – Home match against Buckie Thistle. Lose again 3-2.

23rd December – Home tie this time the visitor are Brora Rangers. We lose 2-0.
