Match Report

Six of the best was dished out by Academy to hapless Fort William although you would not have thought that likely at half-time. Despite being 1-0 up at the interval, Wick’s performance resembled that of a sloth on valium such was the lack-lustre display they had offered. Passes were going astray, off the ball movement was poor and shots were going so much astray that you thought the team hadn’t seen a set of goal posts before. Granted the pitch was playing as if someone the night before had set about Harmsworth Park digging for peat but even so, a team of a higher quality than Fort William would have made Wick pay for their ineptitude.
Whatever was said by boss Tom McKenna at half-time, and it needed saying, it did the trick as a more determined and professional Academy side set about deconstructing their rock bottom visitors. With all respect to Fort William, this was seen as a home-banker for Wick and maybe the home side felt as if victory would come on a plate. Bottom of the table Fort may be, they still have their pride and their work-rate had some in the crowd concerned that if Academy didn’t wake up, a shock result may have been in the offing.
Even the goal that Wick scored to take the lead with had a huge slice of luck. Jack Halliday’s innocuous side-foot looked set to roll into the arms of Fort keeper Euan Campbell only for the ball to take a huge deflection and leave the visiting stopper stranded as it trundled into the net.
You would have expected Academy to kick on from there but the sloppiness continued and the home side found themselves fortunate that Fort’s Aidan Taylor fluffed a sitter when it would have been easier to score.
Then came the second half and a new Wick fresh from receiving a rocket from the boss thankfully decided to give the paying public a show.
Their second came via the penalty spot after Halliday was hauled down by Lewis Campbell. Richard Macadie duly fired in from 12 yards.
Number three came just after the hour mark with a bullet of a header from Steven Anderson that let Euan Campbell helpless.
Fort by now had the stuffing knocked out of them and their resolve collapsed. A defensive mix-up allowed Michael Steven to finish from close-range.
Then within a minute from coming on as a substitute in his comeback after a year out with injury, Davie Allan scored with his first touch of the ball with a well-taken finish from inside the box.
The pick of the bunch was saved until last. A pinpoint cross from Halliday was finished with aplomb by Grant Steven’s diving header.
With a midweek tie away to Strathspey on their minds, Academy eased up to conserve their energies for the trip ahead. One that they’ll head into with confidence thanks to a half-time rollicking.

Manager's Programme Notes

Delighted to see Davie Allan back today and scoring with his first touch of the ball after coming on as a sub. He has been out injured for about a year, so it was great to see him back on the field.
