Turriff United beat Academy by 2 goals to 1 today to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. With five games played they top the table by goal difference over Cove Rangers who beat Brora 3-0.
Academy got off to a flyer when with only 5 minutes on the clock Gary Weir capitalised on slack play by the Turriff defence and he opened the scoring with a close range finish. The Scorries should have doubled their advantage 5 minutes later when referee Graham Beaton awarded a penalty, but Sam Mackay's spot kick hit the bar. The home side drew level on the quarter hour. Andrew MacAskill floated in a free kick and Cameron Bowden powered home his header. Jamie Beagrie scored the winner in the 62nd minute when he also netted from close range.
It was a promising start for Academy who conjured up four shots on target in the first five minutes.
In just the second minute Grant Campbell spotted Sam Mackay moving into the box from the left and slipped the ball to the feet of his midfield team mate who forced Turriff keeper into a diving save inside his near post. Main then held a well struck 25 yard drive from James Pickles and another Mackay effort.
In the 5th minute Wick attacked again and Gary Weir chipped a pass from the right across the box but just beyond Mackay. Steven Anderson retrieved the ball near the touchline, whipped it low across the face of goal past a couple of defenders and Weir scrambled it over the line inside the back post.

A neat flick by Davie Allan on the right gave the overlapping Michael Steven the chance to cross low towards the near post where Weir hooked it into the sidenetting.
In the 9th minute Mackay at the right corner had to skip to avoid a scything tackle from Artjoms Kuznecovs which sent the ball and the flag bouncing over the barrier into the spectators. Danny Mackay swung the resultant corner kick towards the penalty spot and that was where referee Graham Beaton pointed, indicating an infringement by Kuznecovs who was shown the first yellow card of the afternoon.
Sam Mackay thundered his spot kick against the bar and clattered down partly behind the line spun forward and was hooked to safety by Stuart Cumming.
Five minutes later Turriff were level. Andy MacAskill floated a free kick diagonally into the box where Cammy Bowden leapt highest to power a header into the net.

The rest of the half was mainly Turriff in possession in the Wick half but failing to penetrate a well marshalled defence. Allan and Campbell were both booked for fouling MacAskill.
After swapping passes with Allan in the 33rd minute Weir tested Main with a left footed lob and on 40 minutes another break forward saw Sam Mackay through on goal and Main smartly off his line to smother the shot point-blank.

The Scorries dominated the opening ten minutes of the second half forcing two corners. A lob into the box by Danny Mackay from the right deceived friend and foe alike to bounce harmlessly off the back post.
On 55 minutes Gary McGowan fouled then grappled with M Steven on halfway line and both were booked. Grant Steven lofted the free kick high into the box where Weir headed it on for Main to make an easy catch.
From the keeper's clearance the ball went wide left then across to Jamie Beagrie who lashed it into the net from about 10 yards.
Turriff United 2 - Wick Academy 1
Weir was booked on the hour and after each team made a double substitution Gary Manson and Richard Macadie almost made an immediate impact. Manson played a 1-2 on the left, laid the ball back to Macadie who with his first touch sliced just over the bar. Nikolas Wozniack was the 7th and last name in the book as Academy launched a few late efforts but Turriff held out to keep their 100% record and stay top equal in the HFL table.
