Match Report

Academy welcomed league leaders Fraserburgh to Harmsworth Park today and both teams served up a very entertaining game of football with a 90th minute Richard Macadie penalty enough to separate the sides by the odd goal in five.

In total there were three penalties in the game with fans on both sides I am sure debating long and hard as to whether any of them should have been awarded.

John Chalmers converted the first penalty for the visitors but Academy roared back into the game scoring two goals in as many minutes through Macadie and Davie Allan to put the Scorries in at the half-time break with a 2-1 advantage.

Another penalty converted by Chalmers drew the scores level just before the hour mark. In the last minute of the game Davie Allan was fouled right on the edge of the Fraserburgh box. Referee Graham Elder initially awarded Academy a free-kick, but he was drawn over to the near-side assistant who had his flag out, and after a brief conversation changed his decision to a penalty kick. Fraserburgh keeper Scott Cowe got a hand to Macadie's spot-kick but he couldn't keep it out.

In the final few seconds of the game Fraserburgh Manager Kris Hunter was sent from the technical area and the Harmsworth roar went up when the full-time whistle sounded as Academy made it two league wins on the spin against very tough opposition.

The first real chance of the game came on 20 minutes. In a great sweeping move Sam Mackay lobbed the ball over the top of the Fraserburgh back-line for Macadie who squared to Geruzel but he chipped his attempt just over the top of the Broch cross-bar.

The visitors opened the scoring on 20 minutes when they were awarded the first penalty of the game. Peter Bruce drove onto the box and Alan Farquhar slid in to win the ball. Despite Academy protests that the Farquhar challenge was fair referee Graham Elder pointed to the spot and John Chalmers stroked home a well taken penalty that gave McCarthy no chance on the Wick goal.

0 - 1

The Academy response was immediate. Davie Allan blazed down the right wing before crossing to Macadie and he swept the ball home from 16 yards out to square the scores.

1 - 1

From the re-start Grant Campbell intercepted a loose ball and pumped it up to the half-way line where Geruzel flicked it on to Davie Allan who homed in on goal and finished with an aplomb.

2 - 1

So two goals in as many minutes and Academy hunted for more. Both Geruzel and Macadie had shots on target that were saved by Scott Cowie in the Broch goal.

On the stroke of half-time David Allan's pace again saw him clean through on goal but he held his head in his hands as his shot flew just wide of target.

Half Time - Wick Academy 2 - Fraserburgh 1

On the hour Fraserburgh squared the scores when referee Elder awarded then their second penalty of the game. Michael Steven held his ground just inside the Academy penalty area and Scott Barbour appeared to simply run straight into him, but the spot kick was awarded to the howls of protest from the Academy players and supporters. Chalmers again stepped up and converted for his second of the game.

2 - 2

In the last minute of the game Academy played the ball up the right flank to the very edge of the Fraserburgh penalty area to the feet of Davie Allan. He backed his way into Russell McBride and was taken down. Referee Elder initially flagged for a foul but the Academy players surrounded him claiming first contact on Allan was inside the box. The near-side assistant had his flag up and following a brief discussion with the referee the decision was changed to a penalty kick. With the finger-nails of the home support disappearing fast Richard Macadie stepped up and fired the penalty low to the right of keeper Cowe who got a good hand to the ball but couldn't prevent it going over the line for a late winner.

3 - 2

In the dying seconds the Fraserburgh manager Kris Hunter continued to voice his displeasure regarding the late penalty decision and he was sent from the dug-out.
