Match Report

Academy probably had as many goal scoring chances as Huntly, but Dave Cormie's side take took their chances today, and lead the table. Goals from Neil Reid and Neil Gauld giving them all 3 points.

David Mowat was on the bench, but Craig Shearer and Andrew MacLeod both made the starting line-up.

Academy played up the Harmsworth slope for the first half with a very strong wind behind them. Within the 1st minute they went on the attack and forced a free-kick at the edge of the Huntly box. Gary Farquhar fired it in and it got deflected for a corner. David Cowie took the corner, and the wind moved the ball in the air deceiving the Huntly defence, and Andrew MacLeod got a free header on it but sent it over the top of Bremner’s cross-bar.

Academy had the better play in the opening minutes, but clinical finishing from Huntly saw them take the lead in 8 minutes. Neil Reid found himself free in the box, and he picked up a through ball and curled it past a diving More into his bottom right hand corner.

0 – 1
5 minutes later and Reid almost turned provider when he sent a piercing ball through the heart of the Academy defence, sending Bruce Cormie on a race for the ball, but More came out and smothered it just in front of him.

Clever play from Richard Macadie in the 24th minute almost saw Academy back on level terms, when from 25 yards he used the wind to try and curl in a right foot shot, but it whistled just past Bremner’s left hand post.

Huntly then had two chances to increase their lead in the space of as many minutes. Bruce Cormie got free down the right wing, cut inside and fired a low shot at goal that More saved well with his feet. The ball parried back out to Cormie and he took it around More and fired again at the empty net, but Shaun Sinclair tracked back and made a brilliant off the line clearance.

2 minutes later and Huntly pressed again and number 2 Neil Murray found himself well up-field after a corner kick, and he had a good right foot shot on target that More saved well, turning the ball around his post.

Academy were forced to make a change 5 minutes before half-time, Shane Sutherland coming off with an injury, and Gary Weir coming on.

Academy almost squared the game in the last minute of the first half. Gary Manson started the move from deep inside his own half, and sent Shaun Sinclair up the wing. Sinclair cut the ball over to Martin Gunn, and Gunn hit a crisp drive from 20 yards, but his shot went narrowly past the Huntly right hand post.

Half Time 0 – 1

Academy had one of their best chances of the game in the 52nd minute, but ironically Huntly doubled their lead from it. Weir sent in a good pass to Richard Macadie, and Macadie forced a really good save from Bremner from 12 yards out. The ball broke out of defence, and was fired up-field to Neil Gould who drove at the Academy back-line before firing home past More from 18 yards out.

0 – 2

Huntly were using the ever-increasing wind to their advantage by this stage in the game, and 2 minutes after their goal a high ball into the Academy box was missed by Stewart Ross, and More made a brave dive onto the ball at the feet of Neil Gauld to deny him a shot at goal.

To their credit Academy battled away, and Gary Manson almost caught keeper Bremner napping with a right foot shot from 18 yards out, but Bremner reacted just in-time to turn it around his post.

Craig Sheerer was replaced with Alex Lamb in the 69th minute.

In the 75th minute Academy had a good period of sustained pressure on the Huntly goal. Gary Weir managed to take the ball around an advancing Bremner and he crossed for David Cowie, but Cowies attempt on goal was charged out by Mark Gray.

In their next attack some determined play by Macadie up the wing got Gunn into a good position at the edge of the Huntly box. Gunn took the ball down with his back to goal, turned and hit it on the half-volley, and keeper Bremner turned it for a corner. The corner-kick was drilled back into the Huntly box, and after a half-hearted clearance by the Huntly defence Gary Farquhar got a shot on target that was parried out by Bremner. This time the ball came to Gunn and he forced a wonder-save from Bremner, who once again denied Academy a goal.

The final part of the game was punctuated with Huntly substitutes and the only remaining action of note was another good save from More from Russell Guild in the 86th minute.
