Match Report

Wick turned on the style to outclass an enthusiastic young Fort William team, taking the lead after just 3 minutes when defender Gary Manson was on the 6 yard line to sweep the ball past keeper Robin Harvey. Danny Mackay made it 2-0 on 29 minutes with a low drive through a crowded penalty area, Steven Anderson adding a third before the break. Sam Mackay netted just inside the post after 49 minutes and rifled in a fifth on 65 minutes. Anderson ran onto a through ball from Gary Weir to slip a 10 yard shot low past Harvey in the 77th minute and 3 minutes later Richard Macadie fired high into the net to make it 7-0. The visitors' efforts were rewarded when a neat cross from the left by Glen Fell was volleyed into the top corner from 15 yards. Anderson completed his hat-trick five minutes from time.

Academy manager Gordon Connelly took the opportunity to rest some of his regular starting line up and give a first start to young forward Marc MacGregor.

Wick turned on the style from the first whistle and took the lead after just 3 minutes when Richard Macadie made ground down the right wing, slipped the ball to Steven Anderson whose cross along the 6 yard line was met by Gary Manson who swept it nonchalantly past keeper Robin Harvey.

Wick Academy 1 - Fort William 0

In the 8th minute Scott White crossed from the Fort William right, low across the face of goal to the back post where Daniel Mackintosh appeared to be so surprised that the ball had reached him that he failed to react quickly enough and missed the chance of an apparently simple tap in.

MacGregor made some good runs on and off the ball and midway through the half took a pass from Anderson in his stride on the 18 yard line and laid it back smartly to Macadie whose drive deflected high in the air off a Fort defender and was gratefully collected second bounce by keeper Harvey.

Davie Allan squared the ball along the 18 yard line after a short corner on the right from Macadie. Danny Mackay lashed a low drive through a crowded penalty area for the second goal.

Wick Academy 2 - Fort William 0

Anderson won a corner on the left which Macadie lofted high into the goal-mouth. Harvey punched it away and Anderson, who had taken up a perfect position outside the box on the right and drilled in an action replay of Mackay's goal.

Wick Academy 3 - Fort William 0

There had been only one foul in the first half but a bad one to bring down Sam Mackay on the Academy left saw White's name go into referee George Robertson's book.

Half Time - Wick Academy 3 - Fort William 0

Sam Mackay completed a fine passing move by netting a low drive just inside the post after 49 minutes.

Wick Academy 4 - Fort William 0

The young enthusiastic Fort William side refused to lie down and Academy keeper Sean McCarthy was twice called into action near the hour mark, blocking Lewis Morrison's drive with his feet and holding on to a well struck 5 yard effort from John Macleod.

The final quarter of the game brought plenty of goalmouth action for the 400 fans enjoying the Harmsworth Park sunshine. Maybe the Fort defence were tiring but faced by Academy's slick passing they didn't know who to chase.

Sam Mackay rifled in a fifth on 65 minutes.

Wick Academy 5 - Fort William 0

At the bottom end Morrison cut in from the Fort right and beat McCarthy's dive with a low shot across the face of goal but was unlucky to see the ball bounce off the base of the back post.

Anderson ran onto a through ball from Gary Weir to slip a 10 yard shot low past Harvey in the 77th minute.

Wick Academy 6 - Fort William 0

3 minutes later Anderson was the provider for Richard Macadie who fired high into the net to make it 7-0.

Wick Academy 7 - Fort William 0

The visitors' efforts were rewarded when a neat cross from the left by Glen Fell was volleyed into the top corner by Iain Maclellan from 15 yards.

Wick Academy 7 - Fort William 1

A Grant Campbell pass set up Anderson who completed his hat-trick.

Wick Academy 8 - Fort William 1

There was still time for Weir and James Pickles to test Harvey as the Scorries almost equalled their record highest score.
