Academy traveled to Keith today in need of a win following the disappointment of being knocked out of the Highland League Cup last weekend by visitors Lossiemouth. Sam Mackay was sent off in that game so was suspended for today's match. Michael Steven was unavailable and Ross Allan is out for the rest of the season with a broken arm. Young Alan Hughes got his first start of the season and his screamer of a goal, his first in Academy colours, 18 minutes from full-time secured a vital 3 points.
Keith created the first chance of the game in the 2nd minute. The ball was played over the top down the outside right channel to Sean Keith and from about 20 yards he fired high over the Academy cross-bar.
Academy's first chance came from a Richard Macadie free-kick about 20 yards from goal which hit the Keith wall and spun up in the air. Gary Manson was on hand on the left corner of the box but his right foot volley went just over the cross-bar.
Academy created another chance on the 23rd minute. Alan Hughes won a corner on the right that was crossed in by Macadie. Geruzel got to the ball but sent his attempt just past the post.
A minute later Macadie on the left flicked the ball over his marker to Davie Allan who fired a shot across the face of goal but it flew past the outside of the post.
A good spell for Academy saw them create another chance. Geruzel picked the ball up in the middle of the park and he switched it right to Alan Hughes. He cut in and from about 20 yards got a shot off but it went straight to ex-Academy keeper Daniel Bell.
Geruzel picked up a booking a minute from half-time and the sides went in at the break goalless.
Half Time - Keith 0 - Wick Academy 0
Just before the hour Academy should have taken the lead. A thrown in on the left was slipped on by Geruzel to Davie Allan who stepped over the ball allowing Macadie to surge into the box. He squared to Alan Hughes but from 12 yards he fired high over the bar.
On 65 minutes Bell pulled off two great saves to keep the scores at zero. It started from a poor kick-out by Bell that went straight to Shearer. He played the ball into Geruzel who side-stepped his marker and got his shot on target that Bell tipped around his post for a corner. Macadie swung in the corner and Geruzel powered in a header from the penalty sport which Bell tipped over his cross-bar.
Academy were having their best spell of the game. Shaun Sinclair sent a pass up-field to Hughes and his cross cum shot smacked off the face of the cross-bar.
Keith were next to have a crack when Robbie Collinson picked the ball up on the edge of the Academy box. He made himself some space but his shot deflected off an Academy body and went wide for a corner.
On 72 minutes Academy opened the scoring. More sent a long kick-out up-field that was flicked on by Geruzel. The ball bounce through to Alan Hughes who took it on the volley 25 yards from goal and it flew into the top left hand corner.
0 - 1
3 minutes from full-time Keith almost levelled the scores. A long ball from Stewart Hutcheon was chested down by Matthew McDonald to Sean Keith just inside the box but he couldn't get a clean contact on his volley and the ball flew just wide of target.
Full Time - Keith 0 - Wick Academy 1
The result lifts Academy a point above Buckie Thistle into 7th in the table and we now face Brora Rangers at Harmsworth Park next Wednesday night the 26th. That match has an 8:00pm kick-off.
