Match Report

Academy started the 2013/14 HFL season with 3 valuable points and stretched the unbeaten home record into a 21st month, though they had to work hard to break down a stubborn Buckie defence.

In 4 minutes Richard Macadie's free kick from the left side of the box was knocked just wide by Craig Shearer under pressure from several defenders at the near post.

The strong crossfield wind caused problems for both teams but Buckie nearly took advantage in the 17th minute when a swirling high pass from Macadie on the left fell short and Shaun Carrol raced forward to intercept near the 18 yard line but he couldn't capitalize from it.

A scorching 25th minute Davie Allan run up the right touch line took him to the bye line but his cross into the goalmouth was kicked high into the car park for a corner and 2 minutes later a 25 yard drive by Stevie Cunningham was well fielded by Buckie keeper Kevin Main.

In the 29th minute a shot from Chris Hegarty took a deflection and fell short but it needed smart reactions from keeper James More dashing from his line to smother the spinning ball as the Buckie midfielder followed up.

In the next minute the Scorries had a penalty when James Pickles was pushed by Shaun Wood near the back post as they jumped for a high cross from the right from Macadie. Gary Weir drove the spot kick against the base of the post, it bounced high on the rebound and Pickles' effort was grabbed by Main.

Wick took the lead in the 36th minute when Gary Manson chased a Pickles though ball up the left and dodging 3 defenders, he cut into the box and clipped it neatly past Main from 8 yards.

Academy finished the first half strongly. Weir's glancing 40th minute header from Cunningham's right wing cross fell wide, Macadie was tripped by MacRae 40 yards from goal with the free kick scrambled away and a Macadie shot was cleared off the line for a corner from which Shearer headed just wide.

Half time - Wick Academy 1 - Buckie Thistle 0

Buckie almost equalised in the 46th minute when Fraser Forbes cut in from the left and fired low past the back post.

On 55 minutes Allan raced through the middle, was stopped on the 18 yard line by a firm tackle, regained possession but from a static position his shot lacked enough power to beat Main.

In the 64th minute Nikki Smith broke clear up the middle but Alan Farquhar chased back to force him into a hasty pass to his right. Sub Craig MacMillan returned it low into the middle and Farquhar cleared calmly up to midfield to set up a counter attack. Weir in an offside position kept away from a long through ball from Shearer and Pickles chased an apparent lost cause to the edge of the 6 yard box to poke the ball past Main but into side net.

Midway through the half Buckie sub Craig MacMillan fired a swerving drive from the left which curled in but just wide of the back post.

Academy seemed to have a firm grip in midfield for a spell. Allan sprinted down the right and MacRae had to concede a corner to prevent a cross. From Macadie's flag kick the ball went to and fro several times high across the box, swirling in the wind but eventually out for a goal kick. A Macadie shot was deflected high for a corner on the Academy right from which Shearer headed over the bar.

A fine passing move earned Wick's second goal after 74 minutes. Allan picked out Weir in the middle and he flicked the ball on to set up Macadie who had his first effort from near the penalty spot blocked by Main but coolly netted the rebound.

2 - 0

After 84 minutes Michael Steven fouled MacRae and Aaron Conway's powerful 25 yard free kick was fisted away by keeper More diving to his left.

Main came smartly off his line to snatch the ball at the feet of Pickles. and in stoppage time MacMillan slipped the ball from close range low past More but wide of the goal.
