Keith's far travelled team played their eighth Scottish Cup away tie in five years at a blustery Harmsworth Park and held on for a hard earned win to take another step along the road to Hampden.
With the wind at their backs down the slope Keith had territorial advantage in the early stages and Jonathan Smith twice fired inches wide before Cammy Keith tested Alan Bokas from 10 yards.
Wick went close when Craig Shearer's glancing header from a Richard Macadie free kick on the right flashed past the top of the back post.
A 50 yard free kick from Keith right back Craig Phillips would have been great in the Rugby World Cup, dropping just over the Academy bar. when the ball came to him from the Keith right Dean Donaldson's header just missed Bokas right hand post.
Alan Farquhar was as usual cool and calm at the heart of the Academy defence breaking up a spate of Keith attacks with well timed tackles or forcing opponents to move wide of goal.
When Shearer tripped C Keith just inside the Wick box, the striker slammed the spot kick into the bottom corner of the net to Bokas' right.
0 - 1
From the restart Stevie Cunningham fired over the Keith bar and two minutes before the break Davie Allan ran on to a through ball from Shearer and Keith keeper Andy Shearer dived to his right to save.
Half Time 0 - 1
Gunn went down after a clash in midfield and was carried off by physio Ernie Mackay and assistant manager Tichie Hughes.
A well marshalled Keith defence dealt with seven second half corners and several free kicks while Shearer caught long range efforts from Bokas, Martin Gunn, Grant Steven and Gary Manson. Another Manson 30 yard attempt went too high. The physically bigger and stronger Keith players were winning most of the heading duels with the ball frequently balooning in the air in the wind.
Midway through the half Sam Mackay raced down the left after a quickly taken free kick but curled his shot beyond the back post. Cunningham worked hard to create space for a close range shot only to see it diverted for a corner. The home crowd were angry at the time taken for Keith's goalkicks and free kicks for offside. Eventually keeper Shearer was warned by referee Ross.
As Academy tried to step up the pace their increased aggression led to yellow cards for Shearer, Shaun Sinclair and Sam Mackay.
In a rare Keith attack on 75 minutes Andrew McAskill had his free kick from 30 yards out on the left saved on the line by Bokas.
In stoppage time substitute Stewart Ross shaved Shearer's right hand post with a drive from 15 yards.
Full Time 0 - 1
