Academy had the perfect tonic for next weekend's Scottish Cup game against Coldstream scoring 4 goals in each half to beat Fort William 8-1. Academy had Sam Mackay missing today after he hurt his hand at work this week, but Michael Steven made his return to the starting 11. Fort William were without several first team starters, notably Michael Ellis and keeper John Campbell. Trialist Steve Hyslop took Campbell's place between the sticks.
Very heavy overnight rain cast a doubt on the game going ahead, but a mammoth effort by the Harmsworth ground-staff and helpers saw 100's of gallons of standing water pumped off the park, and referee Douglas Ross gave the game the green light.
Academy opened the scoring after 4 minutes. Macadie whipped a pass into the box to Cunningham who'd made a charge up the left flank. He took one touch to control, and a second to lash the ball home.
1 - 0
Both sides had half chances in a 2 minute spell of play. Davie Allan supplied the crossed ball to Macadie from the right wing but Macadie's shot went straight to the keeper. At the other end Iain Maclellan wriggled into the box but was pushed wide and he fired past the post.
Fort levelled the scores on the 18th minute. Academy cleared a Fort corner and referee Ross spotted the slightest of contact just inside the box as Cunningham tried to reach the ball and he awarded the visitors a penalty. Sean Grant took the spot kick and although More got a hand to the ball he couldn't keep it out.
1 - 1
Academy responded immediately and within 2 minutes they restored their lead. Davie Allan again provided the crossed ball after another surging run up the right wing. Cunningham was on hand in the middle of the box to pick up the crossed ball and he had time aplenty to pick his spot for his second of the game.
2 - 1
Cunningham turned provider for Academy's 3rd when after some intricate wing play he laid the ball on for Martin Gunn and he put his lacers through the ball from 20 yards out to power home into the right hand corner of Hyslop's net.
3 - 1
Fort had a chance to pull a goal back in the 35th minute. Sean Ellis fired a free kick in on target and More could only parry out the wet ball. It fell to Graeme Bamber just inside the box but he fired his first time attempt over the top of the target.
Iain MacLellan was next to try his hand for the visitors when he got a shot on target that looked goal-bound but More made a diving save to turn the attempt round his post.
With tricky conditions underfoot Davie Allan was proving to be a real hand-full for the Fort defence and he again drove up the right flank and crossed for Weir who slipped the ball under the body of Hyslop from 2 yards out.
4 - 1
Academy almost scored another just before the break but Hyslop got a finger to a Macadie drive to tip the ball over his cross-bar.
Half Time 4 - 1
In the first attack of the second half Macadie drove an inviting ball right across the Fort goal-line but there were no takers to knock it home.
Academy went nap in the 54th minute. Grant Steven drove an attempt from a tight angle that took a flick off Darren Duncan. Weir fired the ball goal-bound and it was half-blocked and looked to ping back off the post before Davie Allan followed in and knocked home.
5 - 1
Craig Shearer past up a great chance to then get his name on the score sheet when he found acres of space in the box with ball at feet but he shot straight at keeper Hyslop.
Fort almost gave away another when Hyslop came out of his box to head a high ball away. The ball held up in some surface water and Macadie had a speculative attempt at goal from 35 yards out but his shot went just wide of the target.
Cunningham was replaced by Ross Allan and he got a warm round of applause from the Harmsworth faithful for his contribution to the game.
Number 6 came in the 76th minute. The ball was played to Weir at the back post and he cut it back across to Grant Steven who was unmarked and had the simplest of finishes from a yard out for his first goal for the Scorries.
6 - 1
10 minutes from time number 7 followed and this one was probably the best goal of the bunch. Macadie and Davie Allan linked up with a neat one-two before Allan slid in a perfect pass for Macadie to run onto and from a tight angle he slammed home.
7 - 1
In the last attack of the game Academy equalled last year's result against the visitors when Alan Farquhar drove from mid-field to set up Davie Allan and he slipped the ball under the advancing Hyslop for his second of the game.
8 - 1
Final Score 8 - 1
