Academy suffered a night of misery at Harmsworth Park as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat to Nairn County, with the Scorries playing out the last half-hour with just nine men after Andrew Macleod and David Allan were both given their marching orders.
It was a disjointed and dispirited display by a Wick side visibly lacking in confidence, and they contributed to their own downfall by scoring two own goals.
Academy started brightly enough but they fell behind after four minutes when Nairn's first attack brought the opening goal.
An uncharacteristic slip by Alan Farquhar allowed Steven Mackay to run through one-on-one with James More. Mackay was forced wide and his initial effort rebounded off the near post but he reacted quickly and lashed the ball home at the second attempt.
On 18 minutes it was goal number2 for Nairn. A slow build-up and the ball finds John Cameron and from about 22 yards his shot flew onto the head of Andrew MacLeod and into the back of the net with More wrong-footed.
On 25 minutes Nairn win a free-kick 25 yards from goal after Wayne Macintosh was fouled, Mackay stepped up to take it but he fired high and wide of goal
On 42 minutes a throw-in for Nairn on the right found Dale Gillespie, he twisted and turned in the box and fires the ball across the face of goal and just wide.
Half-time Wick 0 - Nairn 2
51 minutes played and Wick go close with their first real clear cut chance, Gary Weir forces a great save from the Nairn keeper who has to tip the ball over the bar.
On 56 minutes there was real controversy. A cross is worked across goal to Robbie Duncanson, he volleys into the 6 yard box and Mackay hits towards goal, the ball is fired like a rocket at Andrew Macleod and looked to hit him on the shoulder before flicking up for More to turn over the cross-bar, but ref awards a penalty and send Macleod off for a hand-ball and deliberately preventing a goal. Duncanson stepped up to take the penalty and sent More the wrong way. As the players were heading back towards the centre circle Davie Allan said something to upset the referee and he duly showed Allan his second yellow card and Academy were reduced to nine men.
With 71 minutes played it was a fourth and final goal for Nairn, Gregg Main floats a ball into the box which finds the unmarked Duncanson who volleys into the ground. Craig Shearer stuck out a leg to block it, but diverted it past More for the second OG of the game.
