A 3 goal first-half blitz by Forres saw them going into the break with a comfortable lead. Academy however showed their fighting spirit and when Weir pulled a goal back from the penalty spot with 9 minutes of the second half played it was game-on. David Allan scored a second for the Scorries with full time almost up, and with 4 minutes of extra time to add the Scorries pushed to the end, but fell just short of forcing extra time.
Wick looked fit and active as the game got under way, with Richard Macadie, Sam Mackay and David Allan all creating chances and pushing into spaces during the first few minutes, but the strong start did not last long.
The Can-Cans took the lead from a corner in the seventh minute, with Kevin Shortreed swinging the ball neatly to the near post, allowing Kyle Scott to give the ball a powerful header to the back of the net.
The first 15 minutes of the match saw Academy's confidence slip, as the goal concession and Ryan Green's threatening presence downfield took their toll on the Scorries' nerves in what looked to be shaping up to be a pacey game.
By the 19th minute the Wick players were looking increasingly worried, keeping a back heavy formation to deal with the Forres threat, and after 20 minutes of play the juggernaut figure of Ryan Green finally broke through the Wick defence. The veteran striker took a ball headed on by Scott and hammered it low past James More, making it a brace for the Can-Cans. Green was subsequently booked for pulling his shirt over his head while celebrating.
Wick continued to be shut down on their push forward and Forres soon struck back, with Green flying up the field in the 28th minute and putting a powerful shot wide into the Academy defence before it went out.
Again Kevin Shortreed took the corner, swinging the ball in from the right, with Nathan Sharp going low at the back post to head the ball home, making it 3-0 at 28 minutes.
More kept his composure when two corner kicks for Forres brought the ball within striking distance again, but by the end of the first half Academy looked drained.
Half Time 0 - 3
The Scorries came on like a different team in the second half, making two attempts, courtesy of Macadie and Weir, within minutes of returning to the field. In the 53rd minute Allan went on a masterful run, getting the ball to team captain Martin Gunn whose shot was saved by Knight.
Controversy followed a minute later when Weir was pulled down at edge of the box. The Forres players argued that the offence was outside the 18-yard line, but the referee disagreed and awarded a penalty to Academy which Weir took, sending Knight the wrong way and putting the ball into the bottom right of the net to the joy of the gathered Academy fans.
The Scorries looked much more assertive in the second half, with shots coming from Weir, Macadie and Allan as they battled through the Forres defence.
Wick striker Allan was booked for an infringement just before the hour mark and three minutes later Forres swapped Neil Whyte for Fraser Bremner, before Ross MacPherson was shown a yellow for protesting a decision in the 72nd minute.
Three minutes later Weir tried for another penalty, which the referee refused, but by this point Forres were starting to realise that an active first half had pushed them too hard, resulting in Green being subbed in the 83rd minute.
Around the same time Weir was booked for dissent. Two more subs were made for Forres and Bryan McKiddie was brought on for Wick, replacing Gary Manson.
In the 87th minute, Scorries skipper Gunn took a frustrated swipe at the ball from near the centre spot, putting it over the crossbar, but it was two minutes later, when the Forres defenders failed to clear the ball, that Allan swooped in to take the second goal for Academy.
The Scorries players kept their heads held high as they fought on in the dying moments of the game, but when the whistle blew they couldn't hide their disappointment that the fightback had started a little too late.
