The Academy team set off from Wick this morning at 11:00am for tonight's Active Nation Scottish Cup 3rd round replay with Second Division Brechin City.
Academy start with the same line-up that drew 4-4 with Brechin in the first game in Wick. Gary Weir is back in the squad after recovering from a broken rib that he picked up in the game against Turriff on the 17th of October, and he starts on the bench. Martin Gunn is still out with an injured ankle, and Ross Allan didn't make the trip due to a flu bug. David Cowie is unavailable due to family commitments.
Jim Duffy starts with two changes to his opening line-up. Gary Fusco and Mark Docherty came on as subs in the first game, and they get the nod to start tonight. Ex Stenhousemuir right-back David Murie is also introduced to the bench.
The rain has started to fall again at Glebe Park, but the game has thankfully just kicked off with a place in the next round against Ayr United up for grabs, so fingers crossed.
10 minutes in and the boys have settled in well. They are passing the ball around and closing down. There are approximately 80 Academy fans in one of the stands and they are making themselves known. They are currently singing "Brechins not a city it's a toon".
17 minutes played and ex Cowdenbeath midfielder Gary Fusco opens the scoring for the home side. Charlie King fed Willie Dyer up the left wing. He whipped in a the cross and Fusco stuck it home with a diving header from 12 yards out, cross goal and past Bokas into the bottom corner.
0 - 1
Half an hour on the clock and Brechin have had the best of the last 10 minutes of play. Still though they are only a single goal up, so plenty of time left.
7 minutes before half time and Academy level the scores. Craig Shearer slots David Allan iinto the box and he is taken down in the box for the second week running by keeper Nelson. Sam Mackay steps up and repeats the dose administered in the first game by firing home to Nelson's right. The Academy support go ape!!
1 - 1
Academy almost increase their lead. Gary Manson crossed for David Allan and he smacked a first time shot that went just wide into the side-netting.
Brechin respond within minutes. Mark Docherty dribbled through the heart of the Academy defence and hammered a right foot shot across Bokas and into the corner.
2 - 1
Time up for the first half and Academy still have it in them to pull off a shock.
Half Time 2 - 1
18 minutes of the second half played and Charlie King is starting to run the show for Brechin. He contributes to Brechin's 3rd goal by again supplying a cross from the right. Rory McAllister gets himself free in the box and heads the ball down into the ground and into the net.
3 - 1
Academy make a change with Bryan McKiddie coming on for Stevie Cunningham.
72 minutes gone and Brechin look as if they may have put the game beyond doubt. Rory McAllister fires in a looping shot from the right hand side which dipped over the top of Bokas and into the net for his second goal of the game.
4 - 1
72 minutes and Gary Weir takes the park coming on for Sam Mackay.
8 minutes left and Academy are not dead yet. They pull a goal back. A neat interchange between Gary Weir and Richard Macadie sees Macadie in some space and he curled a right foot shot past keeper Nelson and into the right hand corner of the net from 12 yards out.
4 - 2
In the 83rd and 84th minutes both sides make another change. Sean McKenna comes on for Rory McAllister, and Alex Lamb comes on for Alan Farquhar.
Only a minute left to play of normal time and Brechin run down the clock by making their final substitution. Mark Docherty is replaced with Mark Cowan.
Referee Crawford Allan blows for full time. Academy can be very proud of their performance against a top 2nd Divison SFL side. To score 6 goals against them in 2 games is outstanding, especially considering that Brechin have only conceeded a total of 14 goals so far in their 15 league games played. Well done boys for giving us a great Cup run, roll-on next year, I can't wait!
Full Time 4 - 2
Brechin now go into the 4th round and face a trip to Ayr United on the 9th or 10th of January. Good luck to them for that game and for the remainder of their league campaign.
Academy are back to league business next weekend with our first ever trip to Strathspey Thistle (the Strathy Jags) at Seafield Park. The Scorries beat the new-comers 8-1 in their visit to the Harmsworth Park, but the team from Granton will be a different proposition I'm sure this time around, now that they have found their feet a little better. Indeed they recorded their 1st league win the weekend before last against Fort William, so that will have given them a confidence boost.
