Match Report

Youngsters arriving at Harmsworth Park were greeted by Santa Claus and by 4.40 pm adult Academy supporters had also received an early Christmas present an emphatic win against a team from near the top of the table.
In the second minute Wick keeper Graham Stewart saved a header from ‘Vale player manager Kevin Bremner and then at the bottom end Richard Hughes drove in a cross from the right which ‘Vale keeper Alistair Veitch snatched at Alan Murray’s feet. After Stewart had saved a Bremner effort in the 10th minute Martin Gunn made a surging run down the right and chipped the ball across ahead of Murray. There was a loud appeal for a penalty as Murray tumbled to the ground as Steve Rattray cleared the ball. In the first 30 minutes play was fairly even and although ‘Vale then started to control the game it was still nil –nil at the break.
In the 48th minute a swerving cross from Lee MacDougall on the left cause panic in the ‘Vale defence. Robert Munro who was playing in place of flu victim Duncan MacDonald, centre back Peter Budge and left back Darren Pullen dealt with a series of attacks and then a swift counter attack brought Academy’s first goal. Stewart Sutherland lofted the ball over the ‘Vale defenders who were all up near the halfway line and Murray raced upfield to net his 15th goal of the season.
Richard Clarkson forced Richard Masson to shoot wide and then Stewart saved Masson’s next effort. Steve Dolan and Paul Bridgeford both shot wide and other efforts were blocked by Wick defenders. With only five minutes left Bradley Kerr fired a shot over the bar. Stewart launched a huge kick from a pass back and it reached Gordon MacDonald who was up on the left well into the visitors’ half. Sutherland was running in from the right to meet the cross and steered it into the net to make it 2-0 in the 88th minute.
Two minutes later Pullen took a free kick planned on the training ground. From 25 yards he drove the ball at MacDonald in the middle of the ‘Vale wall, it deflected towards the penalty spot and Murray drilled in number three. The 500 plus crowd had seen a resolute defence soaking up lots of pressure and three clinically finished goals from swift counter attacks.
[Footnote: ‘Santa’ was stalwart Academy supporter James Bremner who had been one of the club’s main helpers earlier in the year working for hours on end on ground improvements. Sadly James died just a couple of years later.]
