Wick Academy welcomed former Manager Barry Wilson’s Inverness Caledonian Thistle Colts to Harmsworth Park for a pre-season friendly.
On an evening of thick fog both teams served up an entertaining match with Academy running out 3-2 winners.
Caley started well and had an early chance from a corner that was flicked onto Harry Nicolson but he turned his effort wide around the post.
Academy opened the scoring on 25 minutes. A break from mid-field saw the ball being played up the left to the feet of Alan Hughes. He drove into the left edge of the penalty box and drove a left footed shot low past keeper Cameron Mackay.
The game ended up with a few bookings, even though a friendly, and after Michael Steven picked one up he was escorted by referee Gordon Seago, after some words had been exchanged, over to the bench and was asked to leave the park, presumably that or be sent off.
Gordon Clark was sharp off his line a few minutes later to block a shot from Roddy Kennedy turning the ball out for a corner.
Just past the half-hour a long diagonal ball found Lewis Hyde on the right flank. He crossed and Roddy Kennedy got in front of Jack Henry to turn the ball home from fairly close range.
Hughes scored Academy’s second on 53 minutes. Good work from Sam Mackay saw him drive forward before he played Hughes into the left side of the penalty area. He netted with a good finish past the advancing keeper.
Caley had a few good chances in the second half, Ross Gunn sent a shot just past Clark’s left hand post and Roddy Kennedy had a right foot shot from the edge of the box that Clark palmed around the post for a corner. Lewis Hyde then fired in a free kick that Clark collected comfortably following good positioning of his defensive wall.
Substitute Jakub Koziol teed Gordie MacNab up and his 30 yard drive whistled just past the post on a greasy Harmsworth Park surface.
Kaziol was involved in Academy’s third goal of the match. He chipped the ball forward to another substitute Jonah Martens who marched into the box before drilling the ball between the legs of keeper Mackay.
Caley pulled one back within 2 minutes. Substitute Matheus Machado was taken down just inside the penalty area by Ross Allan. Machado took the spot-kick himself and fired it into the left hand corner of Clark’s net with the Academy keeper almost getting a glove on it.
