Paul Sheerin took a Dons squad north to round off the testimonial year for Wick Academy talisman Richard Macadie. The thirty two year old airport fireman, a life-long Dons fan, has played 527 competitive games for the Harmsworth Park outfit, notching a club record 195 goals over a period of 16 years.
A crowd of around 400 were in the ground enjoying the sunshine as the Dons started well, David Dangana forcing a good save from McCarthy after only six minutes. Anderson and Mykyta both threatened as Wick found their young opponents hard to contain and it was no surprise when Bruce Anderson opened the scoring after 27 minutes, slipping the ball into the net after a fine move down the Dons right.
Hanratty thought he had doubled the lead a minute later only to be denied by an offside flag. Testimonial man Macadie set up Manson who shot wide as the home side came into it, but they needed a fine save from McCarthy to deny Dangana, the keeper tipping his fierce shot to safety via his left-hand post.
An Anderson shot also crashed off the bar as the Dons looked for a second then, out of the blue on 43 minutes Wick drew level as Craig Gunn’s long range free-kick was deflected into Mair’s top corner.
Anderson and Duncan came close for the Dons early in the second period before the home side stunned their visitors as they took the lead on 55 minutes, veteran striker Gary Weir turning in Macadie’s through ball.
Sub keeper Clark made some fine stops as the Dons pushed for an equaliser, but Wick held out to record a notable victory setting the seal on a memorable testimonial year for Richard Macadie who received a standing ovation when he left the field just before the end.
