Wick Academy made the semi-final of the Highland League Cup last season, but any hopes of a good cup run this year were dashed by visitors Huntly who ran out 3-0 winners. The drawn for round two was made in the Harmsworth Park boardroom after the game, and Huntly have been rewarded with a home tie against Brora Rangers.

Academy had the bulk of possession in the first half with both sides having half-chances and Academy had a fair shout for a penalty when Craig Gunn looked to have been clipped in the box.

Half Time - Wick Academy 0 - Huntly 0

A slack pass out of defence right at the start of the second half was punished by Kai Ross for the opening goal.

Paul Esslemont was free in the box three minutes later to head home a free kick.

Academy pushed hard in the last 20 minutes to try to get back in the game but just couldn’t pull a goal back, and with everyone up Huntly broke down-field on a three-on-one break and Cai Matthews put the icing on their cake.

Wick Academy rescued a point at Kynoch Park today in a dramatic final 10 minutes of the game.

Two second half goals from Michael Selfridge and Craig MacAskill looked to be enough to give the home side the win, but Gary Manson scored from the penalty spot 6 minutes from full time to set up a thriller of a finish.

Hope for Academy looked lost when Ross Allan got his marching order with a straight card in the 91st minute, but in the 4th minute of injury time Jack Henry scored his first goal of this season to snatch a point for the Scorries.

Cammy Keith had a couple of good chances in the opening exchanges. Sean McCarthy turned one attempt around the post for a corner and another Keith drive went just over the top of the crossbar.

Neither team could however find the net and it was all-square at half time.

Halt Time – Keith 0 – Wick Academy 0

The opening goal came from a corner on the Keith left. Michael Selfridge jumped for it at the near post and it seemed to glance off him and into the net.

Craig MacAskill doubled the advantage in the 63rd minute. A high ball was punted into the Academy box. It bounced over the head of Ross Allan and Cammy Keith ran onto it. His shot on goal was blocked by the feet of McCarthy who had come out to narrow the angle. It bounced back to Keith who teed up MacAskill on the edge of the box and his left footed daisy-cutter picked out the bottom left hand corner of the net. The linesman looked as if he may have had a doubt that the original ball over the top to Keith may have been off-side, but after a long debate with referee Dean Donaldson the goal stood.

Academy’s fight-back started in the 84th minute. A corner was swung in and referee Donaldson pointed to the spot when Ross Allan received a barge in the back and went to ground. Gary Manson took the responsibility for the spot-kick and stroked a cool finish into the corner of the net after wrong-footing keeper Greg Simpson.

In the first minute of injury time Keith chipped a high ball up the park. From inside the opposition half Ross Allan was adjudged to have blocked off his man and to Allan’s disbelief referee Donaldson flashed him a red card.

Academy’s equalise came in the 4th minute of injury time. A long ball was played forward and Andy Smith didn’t get enough puff on his back-pass to the keeper allowing Jack Henry to nick in and stick it home from a tight angle
