Academy hit the road today with a trip to face Inverurie at Harlaw Park and goals from Gary Weir, Grant Campbell and Sam Mackay earned the Scorries a valuable 3 points. With Brora in Scottish Cup action their game against Turriff United was postponed, so the three points lifted the Scorries back above Turriff into second spot in the table.
Academy opened the scoring with 13 minutes on the clock. The move started with Sam Mackay who played a high ball up the wing to Davie Allan. Allan played a lofted ball into the box and Gary Weir ghosted in at the back post and struck a first-time volley that beat keeper Scott Mathieson for his 8th League goal of the season.
0 - 1
10 minutes later the Scorries doubled their advantage. The move again started with Mackay who played a neat one-two with Richard Macadie that released Mackay into the Locos box down the left channel. Mackay's attempt was blocked but the ball fell nicely for Grant Campbell on the left edge of the box. He took a touch to take the ball down and curled a cracker into the top right hand corner of the net.
0 - 2
Just past the half-hour and the Locos pulled a goal back. A corner on the Locos left was driven low into the Academy box. Martin Bavidge got to it first and made no mistake in finding the onion bag.
1 - 2
Neither side could increase the goal tally and Academy went in at the break with a slender advantage.
Half Time - Inverurie Locos 1 - Wick Academy 2
Academy created a great chance at the start of the second half with a smashing counter-attacking move. Mackay picked the ball up just inside his own half. He drove forward before laying the ball off to Davie Allan who fired a low cross into the box for James Pickles but he dragged his shot just wide of the keeper's right hand post.
2 minute later Inverurie levelled the scores. Ryan Keir started the attack just inside the Academy half. He sent a great pass for Jordan Leyden who ran onto the ball and delivered a low cross to the back post where Marin Bavidge had a simple tap-in for his second goal of the afternoon.
2 - 2
Academy fought right back with yet another goal. David Allan played the ball into the feet of Sam Mackay who knocked it past his marker to go one-on-one with keeper Mathieson. Mackay kept his cool and fired a left foot shot just inside the keeper's right hand post.
2 - 3
In the next attack the Scorries created another goal-scoring opportunity. Grant Campbell fired a long ball up the left flank and Davie Allan beat the full-back latched onto it and cut inside but his shot went just wide of target.
Both sides continue to attack and Locos came close. Martin Laing played the ball wide to Jordan Leyden and he had a driven shot across the face of goal that James More did well to hold.
6 minutes from full time the home side came close again as they searched for an equalizer. Substitute Dean Donaldson hit the bye-line on the right and delivered a deep cross to the back post where another substitute Lee Cooper got his head to it but the ball landed up on top of the Academy net.
Up the other end it was Academy on the attack. Substitute Jack Halliday set Sam Mackay off on a run and he tried to lift the ball over keeper Mathieson but the Locos stopper made a block and the ball was cleared.
Despite continued Locos pressure Academy held on to record a great win.
