Wick Academy FC would like to confirm that the Inverness Caledonian Thistle players we had on a Development Loan contract, have been returned to their parent Club.

We would like to thank both Alasdair Stark and Aidan Wilson for their contribution, which included Alasdair picking up a MoM award earlier this season.

Name:   McKenna, Tom

Role:   Manager

Appointed as Manager on the 16th September 2017 following the departure of Gordon Connelly.

Comes to the Club with a lifetimes experience in both playing and coaching football.

Tom has played for numerous clubs in his career including; Rochdale, Airdrie, Stenhousemuir FC, and also played for Amu Zulu in the South African Premier League for two seasons.

Tom has been involved on occasion in his coaching capacity with Wick Academy FC for the last couple of years working with the Under 17's and this season has been involved with the first team squad. Prior to that he coached and managed in different capacities at Rochdale, Dundee University, Alloa and Clyde FC.

Currently holds an UEFA A licence as well as an UEFA Elite Youth A licence.


Name:   Hughes, Richard

Former Academy striker 'Tichie' played in the North Caledonian League  team in the late 70s as a teenager.  Scored a memorable goal past Henry Smith in a friendly against Hearts on the 30th of July 1984. Made his Highland League debut against Cove Rangers on the 6th of August 1994 under manager at the time John MacDonald. His first goal came 3 games later in a HL Cup tie against Clachnacuddin at Grant Street Park.   

From season 1994-95 he started 117 games for Academy, and scored 32 goals. At time of writing he remains the clubs seventh highest goal scorer. Tichie took over as co-manager of the Scorries with Ian Munro (Zeeky) in January 2007 following the departure of Peter Budge. He and Munro resigned at the end of season 2010-11 and was appointed assistant manager to Davie Kirkwood in June 2011.

Tichie and co-manager Zeeky were voted as Highland League Managers of the year for season 2009-10 after steering Academy to a 5th place finish in the table, at that date our highest ever league position, after a 10 game winning streak.

Took over as Caretaker Manager on the 1st of September 2012 following David Kirkwood's shock resignation to join Brora Rangers, and was also Caretaker Manager for a brief spell in February 2014 when Barry Wilson left for Elgin City.

Tichie was the co-assistant Manager under Barry Wilson and was then appointed as Assistant Manager to Gordon Connelly at the beginning of February 2014.


Name:   Suttar, Ross

Ross is the son of Ex. Brora Rangers and Wick Academy FC Goalkeeper John Suttar.

Ross started his football career as an apprentice at Ross County FC in 2008 playing for the Under 19 Squad before injury forced him out of football for a spell in May 2010. He returned to football in the SHFL for a short spell with Brora Rangers until he sustained a bad knee injury which ended his football career. None the less this didn't deter Ross and he decided to become a football coach undertaking various SFA coaching badges at various levels and this led him to becoming a part-time coach in Aug 2010 working with Ross County FC, Scottish Football Association and Wick Academy FC.

In April 2012 Ross moved to the Massachusetts in USA after successfully applying to become the Mass Premier Soccer (MPS) School of Excellence Director (SOE) where he successfully guided two of their youth teams into 1st place in their respective soccer leagues.

He returned home to Scotland in November 2012 at the end of the Soccer Season and was once again offered part time coaching positions working for the SFA, Ross County FC and Wick Academy FC as well as helping Halkirk United in the North Reserve League.

Ross started his new post as Wick Academy FC Club Development Officer on the 3rd Feb 2014. Recently completed his UEFA A licence which he has added to his already impressive Coaching CV. 

Was appointed co-assistant Manager in April 2016.

Signed by manager Gordon Connelly for the start of season 2014-15 and holds the number one goalkeeper berth.

Follows in the footsteps of his father Donald McCarthy who also pulled on the Academy goalkeeper jersey for 4 games in seasons 1998-99 and 1999-2000.

Started in his early teens playing between the sticks for Ross County youths. Played in the County under 15's and under 17's before spending two years full-time in the under 20's before being released by Ross County this summer. Was awarded with the John Henderson shield for the young player of the year for his performances in season 2014-15.

Brother of Sean McCarthy was release by Ross County in the summer of 2015. Came up through the youth ranks at Ross County. Has provided vital cover for Sean and has started on several occasions.

Was the Academy Young Player of the Year last season and also picked up the Most Improved player award.

Central defender who signed in September 2016. Played in the Ross County youth set-up from the age of 9, moved onto Clachnacuddin playing in the youth development league and then whilst studying in Glasgow played in University football and Sunday league.

Returning North in 2014 Andrew had a season with Fort William and was then with Nairn County for season 2015-16. Played in Caithness summer football with Pentland United during the summer of 2016.

Grant is the younger brother of Wick Academy's hard tackling defensive player Michael (Joe).

A Young talented Central Defender who signed for Academy in 2011 and is now a regular in the Academy back-line.

Grant played for the highly successful amateur side Pentland United in the Caithness Amateur Football Association County League during the summer months and for North Caledonian League Side Thurso FC in the winter where he enjoyed several cup winning triumphs.

He is a big strong pacy, hard tackling young lad who is a good header of the ball and is comfortable in possession.

Was awarded the John Henderson shield for the young player of the year for his performances in seasons 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14. Grant also picked up the 2012-13 Club Fair Play award with only two bookings for that entire season.

"Joe" as he is known played midfield for the Academy under 19's as a 16 year old in 2005.

Signed for Brora and was a squad player with them for 18 months before returning to Academy in season 2008-09.

An injury in May 2009 in a match for local amateur side Pentland United kept him out for almost 12 months. After a summer season with Pentland United he re-joined Academy.

Joe is a powerful uncompromising young player and is comfortable in either a defensive or midfield position. He has added a physical edge to the team but is also comfortable with the ball at his feet and has been known to score some terrific distance strikes.

Signed on loan from Ross County FC in season 2009-10 for an initial period of 6 months. The Thurso born youngster originally came through the Caithness United Youth System before signing with Ross County FC.

Like his brother David he is also very pacy and can weigh in with his fair share of goals, he is very adaptable in that he can play wide right or left and can also play in the striking role.

The fans appreciate his energy and willingness to work for his team mates.

Broke his leg March 2015 playing against Brora but was flying again by the end of last season.

Appointed Club Captain at the start of season 2014-15. Talented midfielder. Featured for Brora Rangers in the SHFL during his teen years and also started for his village team Castletown helping them to win the CAFA Division 1 and reach the finals of the highly regarded SAFA "Highland Amateur Cup".

Helped North Caledonian League side Halkirk United to a haul of Cup triumphs especially in season 2008-09. Thankfully for WAFC he decided it was time to display his enormous talent at a higher level.

Alan is a very technically gifted and confident player and has been a regular starter since season 2009-10.

Is a big hit with the fans and was voted young player of the year in season 2009-10. Has been a regular starter now for the last five seasons and was the supporters' player of the year for his performances in seasons 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2014-15. Also awarded with the Player's Player of the year award in season 2013-14.

Missed almost a year due to injury and had to have an operation on his hip, just returning to fitness.

He played for local CAFA League Side Thurso Academicals during the summer months. Jack has progressed from the Wick Academy U17 squad where he was voted Youth Player of the Year in 2010.

Signed for the first team in 201415 but went travelling shortly afterwards.

Returns this year for his second spell with the club. Jack is a skilful and very composed young midfielder who is very confident on the ball and has good vision and passing ability.

Midfielder who came through the Ross County youth teams, played for Staxigoe United and in 2017 was a member of the successful Wick Groats team.

Jack has stepped up to join Academy this season and looks as though he will be a valuable asset once he adapts to the tempo of the Highland League.

Started with the club on loan from Ross County under Manager Alistair Budge. Made his league debut against Huntly on the 2nd of August 2003. Played with Academy for most of that season before returning to Ross County.

Was released from Ross County in season 2006-07 and was brought back to Wick Academy by the new manager at that time Peter Budge.

Talented attacking midfielder with good pace and great close ball control. Richard likes nothing better than getting forward and scoring goals.

He is a player the fans love to see with his drive and determination to be successful.

In season 2006-07 Richard was voted joint players' player, supporters' player and young player of the year. In season 2008-09 he also picked up the season's supporters' player of the year award and the prestigious Highland Year player of the year award.

In season 2010-11 he swept the boards being awarded the supporters' and players' player of the year, as well as the Club's golden boot scoring a total of 28 goals.

Was the Club's top goal scorer 2014-15 with a total of 17 competitive goals and in total has scored over 180 competitive goals for Academy.

Signed for Academy in September 2009. Sam is a former Scotland schoolboy international, and had 5 seasons with Brora at Dudgeon Park before signing with Deveronvale.

A player with an abundance of talent that can play in mid-field or up front, and he has given Academy some great options.

Sam is one of the hottest properties in the league and was the Sunday Post Young Player of the year in 2008-09 and repeated the feat in 2009-10.

Holds the unique distinction amongst the current crop of SHFL players of having scored for Scotland both at Schoolboy and Semi Professional level.

During his spell at Brora he played over 100 matches and became one of a select few who have been handed a captains armband whilst in their teens.

Won the Michael McNeill trophy for the goal of the season last year with a sensational strike against Linlithgow Rose in the Scottish Cup, and also won the vote for the Player’s player of the year. Finished off last year sharing the golden boot award with Steven Anderson, both bagging 20 competitive goals for the season.

Played for Highland Amateur Cup winners Pentland United, and had a spell at Ross County before he came through the Academy U18's to become a regular in the 1st team.

Plenty of pace and influential at set pieces. Previously selected for the Highland League North select.

Ex Caithness United, Ross County youngster who signed for the Club from Elgin City. This talented young Thurso born striker has a tremendous amount of pace which takes him past defenders.

Made a big impact 09-10 scoring 28 competitive goals and finishing joint 3rd top scorer in the league. His goal tally also won him the Academy Golden Boot award and the 09-10 supporters' player of the year.

Had a quieter spell in 2010-11 with only 10 competitive goals but in season 2013-14 he was Academy's top scorer with 24 competitive goals to his name.

Was selected as the Player's player of the year in season 2011-12. and again picked up the Supporter’s player of the year in 2015-16.

Has missed 15 months with a knee injury but is now returning to fitness again.

Young forward from Lybster signed by Academy at the start of last season.
A player with a great turn of speed that plays mainly on the right wing. Had trials with Crystal Palace as a youth. Played summer football for Golspie Stafford AFC and Lybster AFC. Helped Lybster AFC lift the Eain MacKintosh Cup.
Has been a great addition to the squad strengthening our attacking options. Already a fans favourite and for his performances in 2014-15 and 2015-16 when he picked up the Dot McLachlan trophy for the most improved player. Finished off last season with a competitive goal total of 20, sharing the golden boot award with Sam Mackay.

Craig's professional career started with Wick Academy in season 2003-04 when he made 31 competitive appearances scoring 25 goals.

He left Wick after a single season for Ross County before having a year on loan at Peterhead, signing for Elgin City in 2009 and in his eight years there became their top scorer with over 100 goals.

Craig finished his time at Elgin in May 2017 and signed for Brora last summer, now returning to play for his home town and Academy fans are looking forward to seeing in the black and white.

Alan is the son of Wick Academy Assistant Manager Richard Hughes. Like his dad he is a striker.

Alan is a very pacy individual with terrific ball control and an eye for a pass and he has his Dad's prolific eye for goal which was very evident for the Under 17 team where he reached 20 plus goals.

Plays summer football with Wick Groats and has won a Highland Amateur Cup medal with them.

23 year old striker who joined Academy in December 2017 and is manager Tom McKenna's first signing.

Started his career at East End Boys Club and had five years at Ross County playing in their youth set-up.

Spent 18 months in the States as part of a football scholarship. Had four seasons playing for Halkirk United in the North Caledonian League and also played in the Staxigoe United side that reached the Highland Amateur Cup final in August 2017.

Over the last week the club has made several signings. Jack Halliday has re-joined the club and he has been joined by young striker Korbyn Cameron. Gary Manson and Marc MacGregor have signed new contracts and we are also delighted to have secured a loan deal from Inverness Caledonian Thistle for wide right/striker Aidan Wilson and right back Alasdair Stark.
