All Gave Some, Some Gave All

With the upcoming 100 year anniversary of the end of World War 1, it is fitting that we should remember the players from Wick Academy who gave their lives in The Great War. Ken Wood researched details of the players last year and this was followed up by further research this year by Donald Fraser.

Our boys have no known graves but they are remembered forever on Memorials in France.

John Begg, died 9th May 1915, remembered on the Le Touret Memorial.
David Duchart, died 25 Sept 1915, remembered on the Loos Memorial.
George Sutherland died 14th June 1917, remembered on the Arras Memorial.
David Skinner died 11th April 1917 and his brother Willie Skinner died 16 May 1917. Both brothers are remembered together in Flanders Field.

Donald Fraser said "On the 5th of November I had the absolute privilege of placing five crosses in the garden of remembrance in Princes Street, Edinburgh, a cross for each of our Wick Academy boys who so bravely gave their lives in World War 1".

Wick Academy will also lay a wreath in memory of the men at the armistice parade in Wick on Sunday the 11th November.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.

Poppy Pictures2

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
