A Harmsworth Park crowd of about 200 turned out for Gary Weir's testimonial against a SPFL Legends and friends team captained by ex-Academy Manager Barry Wilson, and managed by his father Bobby. Those in attendance witnessed a cracking game. The Legends may no longer have had the steam to run things down for the full 90 minutes, but all the touches, vision and range of passing was still there for all to see.

Richard Macadie was first to get a crack on goal. Steven Anderson delivered from the right wing for Macadie but Michael Gray punched his effort away. Davie Allan followed up but screwed his shot wide of target.

On 11 minutes a James Pickles shot took a defection off the foot of Gordon Connelly. It looped over the top of Gray and bounced off the top of the crossbar before falling to Steven Anderson who smashed it home but he was ruled off-side.

A minute later Academy Manager Gordon Connelly clipped Gary Weirs heels just inside the penalty box and Academy were awarded a penalty. Richard Macadie took the spot kick which crept just inside Gray's right hand post.

On the quarter hour neat foot-work by Weir on the outside of the Legends box lead to academy's second. After Weir had escaped the attention of Gary Campbell he slid the ball wide for Gary Manson who cut it back into the path of Weir who took a touch before slamming home with his trusty right foot.

Macadie and Davie Allan combined in Academy's next move which saw a Macadie shot saved by Gray.

The Legends played some neat stuff and won a few corners which they couldn't capitalise on, the last of which was cleared and Academy broke up-field. Weir almost capped the day with a screamer. He smacked a diagonal ball from Richard Macadie on the volley which looked goal-bound but Gray rolled back the years with a great stop.

Davie Allan managed to find grass in front of him as Academy broke from a spell of Legends pressure but Gray came to meet him and smothered his attempt.

Academy won a free-kick which was taken by Weir and he came close to increasing the score-line but his attempt smashed off Gray's right hand post.

A minute before the break the Legends got themselves on the score-sheet thanks to a well taken goal from Barry Wilson. He played a neat one-two with John Robertson before running into the box for Robertson's return pass. James More came out to try to shut him down but Wilson dinked it over him and into the net from a fairly tight angle.

Half Time - Chuckie's Select 2 - Legends 1

After the break James More and Michael Gray swapped sides.

A minute into the second half and Academy missed a great chance to increase their lead. Weir executed his trade-mark double-step-over out on the bye-line before crossing into the box but substitute Andy Falconer blazed over the top.

Weir had another good attempt on goal. From about 20 yards out he sent in a dipping shot which went over the head of More and smacked off the crossbar.

More was kept busy as he saved an Andy Falconer shot and then collected again when Weir tried to chip over his head.

The Legends pulled level on 65 minutes. Chris Taylor bundled over John Robertson in the box and Barry Wilson stroked home his second goal of the game from the penalty spot.

2 - 2

The Legend's winner came in the 71st minute. Blair Lawrie picked up a an inch-perfect diagonal ball and ran into the box, cutting inside Gary Davidson before drilling a right foot shot under the body of Michael Gray.

2 - 3

Neither side could find the net again and the referee blew for full time.

Full Time - Chuckie's Select 2 - Legends 3

So the Legends took the spoils but the day was not about the score-line, it was all about supporting an Academy stalwart who has racked up 417 competitive appearances for the Scorries, scoring 164 goals in the process. Let's hope there are plenty more to come, very well deserved testimonial Chuckie.
