Academy welcomed Rothes as first footers to Harmsworth Park in the preliminary round of the Breedon Aggregates Highland League Cup. Gordon Connelly took nothing for granted in this match-up and a full strength Academy starting eleven cruised into the first round proper with a comfortable 6-1 win.

The game started 15 minutes late as referee Calum Spence was delayed coming north by a road traffic accident.

James Pickles had the first attempt of the game with an over-head kick that went just wide of the left hand post. Steven Anderson was next to have a crack but his attempt also went wide of target.

Gary Weir opened the scoring after 16 minutes. Davie Allan set the goal up by driving to the bye-line before crossing for Weir to smash the ball high into the roof of the Rothes net from 10 yards out.

Academy looked dangerous in every attack and keeper Matthew Mackie did well to block an Anderson shot with his foot. The re-bound fell back to Anderson but Mackie was back on his feet in a flash and comfortably collected the second attempt.

Just before the half-hour Academy doubled their advantage when Davie Allan found himself with room to pick his spot and he drilled home with a low shot.

2 - 0

In first half stoppage time Steven Anderson scored a screamer arrowing home a terrific strike from the corner of the box that dipped under the bar. Keeper Mackie may have got a finger-tip to it but couldn't stop the ball bulging the back of the net.

Half Time - Wick Academy 3 - Rothes 0

Ten minutes after the interval Weir grabbed his second goal of the game to put the contest well and truly beyond the reach of the visitors. Keeper Mackie had got his hand to the ball, to prevent what looked as if it would have been an own-goal, to divert it onto the post but Weir was on-hand to snap up the re-bound which ran across the line and he made no mistake in converting an easy opportunity.

4 - 0

Sam Mackay was inches away from getting in on the act with a flashing drive across goal that shaved the outside of the upright.

Academy went nap when substitute Marc MacGregor got his name on the score-sheet when he reacted first to tuck home after a Sam Mackay shot smashed off the base of the post.

5 - 0

Richard Macadie made it six converting from close range with a well taken volley.

6 - 0

On the stroke of full-time Ricky Henderson smashed home a consolation goal when he got on the end of a throw-in on the left and he powered home from 12 yards out.

6 - 1

Full Time - Wick Academy 6 - Rothes 1

Academy now face an away tie to current cup holders Cove Rangers in the first round proper on the 6th February. In today's other preliminary round match Clachnacuddin beat Deveronvale 3-2.
