An estimated 1,000 Scorries fans rocked Dudgeon Park as they witnessed Wick Academy lift their first ever trophy since joining the Highland League 21 years ago, with a 6-2 win over Nain County.

Nairn started very well but on 7 minutes a flick on from a long ball saw Davie Alan burst forwards. Nairn Keeper Callum Antell came to meet him and took him down just on the edge of the penalty box. It looked as if referee Mat Northcroft was going to award Academy a free-kick but after consulting with his assistant he pointed to the penalty spot. Richard Macadie stepped up, and under what must have been enormous pressure, he kept his cool and hammered down the middle.

1 - 0

Nairn came roaring back from the re-start and Tony Wallace got a good shot on target that Sean McCarthy blocked. Callum Maclean followed in but he fired the rebound over the top of the target.

Down the other end Davie Allan cut in off the left wing but his shot went into the side-netting.

It was end to end stuff and Alan Pollock held his head in his hands as his neat little chip came off the crossbar and Academy scrambled the ball away as the Nairn front-line tried to bundle it home.

Nairn continued to look a threat and on 19 minutes Tony Wallace found himself through in goal but his shot flashed just past the back post.

On 28 minutes some great football saw Academy double their advantage. Academy rampaged down the left flank with a neat interchange of passes between Macadie and Anderson before Danny Mackay was released to the bye-line and he sent a low cross into the six yard box. Gary Weir found himself in acres of space and he made no mistake in smashing the ball home.

2 - 0

Within the space of two minutes Davie Allan delivered a whipped cross into the box which Weir headed on to Sam Mackay and he took it on the volley with his right foot to hammer home from 10 yards out.

3 - 0

On 34 minutes a great attempt from a Richard Macadie free-kick whistled just over the cross bar.

Despite the three goal advantage Nairn still looked dangerous every time they ventured forward and in the last real action before the interval they won a free kick about 30 yards from goal. Dead-ball specialist Conor Gethins took it and Sean McCarthy tipped it over the cross-bar to put Academy in at the break with a three goal lead.

Half Time - Wick Academy 3 - Nairn County 0

On 53 minutes Nairn came close. Sean McCarthy rose to collect a high ball and looked to have been fouled by Sam Urquhart. He dropped the ball and it ran across the goal-line but Tony Wallace couldn't get anything on it to turn it home as McCarthy smothered it at his feet.

Nairn didn't give up and managed to pull a goal back after 56 minutes. Academy failed to clear a Sam Urquhart cross and Alan Pollock pounced on the loose ball and he drilled it into the roof of the net across the outstretched McCarthy.

3 - 1

Any nerves of a Nairn come-back were settled however 4 minutes later. Sam Mackay swung a free-kick into the Nairn box. Michael Steven headed it down to Davie Allan who returned it to him and Steven thumped it home inside Antell's left hand post.

4 - 1

Academy went nap on 66 minutes with the goal that killed the game. Steven Anderson collected a throw-in on the left and he arrowed a great shot across keeper Antell and into the far corner.

5 - 1

With 15 minutes left to play things threatened to boil over. A melee on the deck between Gregg Main and Gary Weir saw the Nain number 10 lash out and referee Mat Northcrot sent him off for an early bath.

Academy took full advantage of the situation and 5 minutes later Davie Allan turned on the ball and set Grant Campbell on his way. He darted in from the right wing, jinked past two defenders and sent a low driven effort under Antell who got something on it but couldn't prevent it crossing the line.

6 - 1

In the final minute of normal time Nairn pulled back a consolation goal when Sam Urquhart nodded home from a corner kick.

6 - 2

There were great scenes at the final whistle as a roar went up from the Academy supporters that must have been heard back in Wick. They stayed behind for the presentations and celebrated with the players as Wick Academy wrote themselves into the history books as they were crowned the 2015 Menzies Distribution North of Scotland Cup champions.
