Academy suffered back to back defeats to championship favourites Buckie Thistle as the home side chalked up a 1-0 win. Striker Steven Anderson was suspended today following his sending off last weekend, but young Brandon Sinclair made his first start for the Scorries.

A second half goal from John Mcleod, his 40th of the season, was all that split the sides today. For the second week running Academy finished the game with only 10 men as Sam Mackay was shown a straight red card in the final minute.

Buckie Thistle claimed a valuable three points in their quest to become league champions with a 2-1 win today at Harmsworth Park. Danny Mackay was suspended for this one, Sam Mackay was unavailable, Davie Allan and Alan Farquhar still out injured. Sean McCarthy started his 100th game for Academy and he was handed the captain's arm-band.

Steven Anderson was sent off for something said to the linesman with only 37 minutes played, but Richard Macadie put the 10 men in front a few minutes later. Sam Urquhart however bagged a double in the second half to secure the win for the visitors.

The match started with action at both ends of the field. Buckie forced a corner with only 2 minute played which Academy cleared, and up the other end a mad scramble in the Buckie box was eventually cleared.

On the quarter hour Buckie looked as if they had taken the lead when a corner kick from Ceiran McLean found its way right through a packed penalty area before being hacked to safety by Ross Allan at the base of the back post.

Drew Copeland was next to have a pop but his effort went just wide of target, and John McLeod then fluffed his lines as he scuffed a weak attempt straight to Sean McCarthy.

Urquhart had a further chance to put the visitors in front but he smoked his attempt well over the top of the Academy crossbar.

Buckie were having the best of the game and gained a real advantage on 37 minutes. The south-stand linesman called over referee Alan Proctor after something was said to him by Steven Anderson, and the Academy striker was given a straight red card.

Ten men Academy took the lead on 41 minutes. Ross Maciver lobbed the ball over the top of the Buckie defence for Richard Macadie who timed his run to perfection. He ran in on target one-on-one with Daniel Bell and kept his cool to slot home with a well taken goal.

Match Day Secretary Position Available

Due to a work relocation we have a position of match day and minute Secretary available at Wick Academy FC.

The role would attract a committee position and require the person to attend on most match days, both home and away.

As part of a restructure the Secretaries role has been split into two different responsibilities and therefor the Club Secretary would be on hand to offer advice and assistance when required.

Good computer and correspondence skills are needed, as dialogue with other Clubs is required on a weekly basis and the WAFC team Manager and Club Chairman.

As with all committee roles this is a non-remuneration position.

Please email in the first instance to register an interest.

Academy made the Wednesday night trip to Grant Park and chalked up their 10th away win in 12 games on the road this season with a 2-1 win over Lossiemouth. The win lifted Academy up to 5th spot in the table. Lossie had taken the lead through Martin Charlesworth but a Sam Mackay double secured the three points.

It took 62 minutes for the opening goal to be scored. Martin Charlesworth made the most of a good break out of defence to slot the hosts in front.

Just two minutes later however the scores were level from a smashing strike by Sam Mackay. Gary Weir and young Ross Maciver had a neat interchange of passes allowing Maciver time to tee-up Mackay. He took it on the volley 20 yards from goal and it screamed passed keeper Darren McConnachie.

Minutes later referee David Watt awarded Academy a penalty when Mackay was fouled inside the box. Mackay took the spot kick and made no mistake powering the ball home.

Academy were knocked out of the Breedon Highland League Cup today at the hands of visitors Turriff United. Academy had good chances with a Richard Macadie drive smacking off the cross-bar and keeper Kevin Main pulled off a great one-handed save to tip a Steven Anderson effort over the crossbar. Academy also had a fairly good shout for a penalty waved away by referee Graham Fraser when Steven Anderson looked to have been pushed over in the box. The winning goal came from Turriff captain Cameron Bowden in the 53rd minute and they now go onto the next round when they travel away again to face either Deveronvale or Nairn County (their game today was postponed).

Fans and players braved horrendous weather conditions at Harmsworth Park today as Academy and visitors Forres battled out a 2-2 draw. Both sets of players must be credited with putting on an entertaining game of football with a strong cross-wind and torrential driving rain persistent for the full 90 minutes.

Steven Anderson stuck away his 17th goal of the season to put the Scorries a goal to the good after only 8 minutes. Stuart Soane squared the scores on 25 minutes to put the teams in at half-time on level terms.

Richard Macadie put Academy ahead again shortly after the break when he scored his 150th league goal for the club, but substitute Garry Tweedie earned Forres a share of the points with only 7 minutes of time left on the clock.

Academy had four first team regulars missing today; Alan Farquhar, Gary Weir, Davie Allan and Andrew Hardwick, but they still managed to bounce back following last weekend's disappointment against Nairn to rack up an impressive 2-0 win away to Deveronvale at Princess Royal Park.

Young Ross Maciver, who signed on loan from Ross County yesterday, made the starting line-up. Andrew Miller and Conor Dunnett were drafted in to help out.

A header from Michael Steven on the stroke of half-time put Academy into the interval with the advantage. On 65 minutes Academy were awarded a penalty which was taken by Sam Mackay. Keeper Grant Pennet saved it but Mackay buried the re-bound.

Vale's Steven Davidson picked up a second booking and was sent for an early bath with 12 minutes remaining, and Academy went on to shut the game out and head back up the A9 with the three points.

The home side started brightly and had a great chance early doors to take the lead but Callum Murray's effort crashed off the post.

Paul Sutherland and Lewis Dunbar also found themselves in great positions inside the Academy box but neither of them could get their shots on target.

As it looked to be going into the break a stalemate Richard Macadie fired a free kick into the Vale box for Michael Steven to rise the highest and he headed passed Grant Pennet.

Academy's stretch of six league wins was brought to an abrupt end today at Harmsworth Park at the hands of Nairn who ran out deserving 5-1 winners. The result is Academy's biggest defeat at Harmsworth Park since August 2014.

Jack MacLean set the visitors on their way after 10 minutes and although Academy did have a few half-chances they looked really out of sorts and Nairn went into the interval with the one goal advantage.

Two goals in three minutes at the start of the second half from Kenny McKenzie and Jordan Macrae saw Nairn in the driving seat and although Steven Anderson pulled one back on 65 minutes Nairn never really looked as if they were going to lose this one. Jack Maclean went on to score his second and Wayne Macintosh made it five in injury time to wrap up the points.

In the first real chance of the game Jack MacLean gave the visitors the lead when he found himself with room to spare 6 yards from goal and he headed home a Greg Main cross from the right wing.

0 - 1

Three minutes later Academy had a great chance to level. Good pressure saw them flood the Nairn penalty area and after an initial scramble in the box a shot form James Pickles was blocked and fell to Grant Steven. He pulled the trigger from 10 yards out but his shot smashed off the crossbar.

Gary Kerr had the ball in the net on 17 minutes but his celebrations were cut short as it was disallowed for off-side.

Nairn kept Academy at bay and Richard Macadie fired over the target from distance. James Pickles also had a crack from long-range and his attempt shaved the top of the Nairn crossbar.

Half Time - Wick Academy 0 - Nairn County 1

Nairn really flew out of the blocks at the start of the second half and within a minute Kenny McKenzie doubled their advantage. He pounced on a poor back-pass from Danny Mackay and made no mistake in slotting the ball under Sean McCarthy and into the net.

Academy chairman James Innes said: "We've signed extension deals with Sean McCarthy, midfield play-maker Sam Mackay, Davie Allan, Ex Brora Rangers and league title medal winner Danny Mackay and forward Steven Anderson, who along with Sam was in Dave Edwards' Highland League 2016 team of the year squad.

"This will be Sam's second extension since he joined the club in September 2009, his previous one being a five year deal back in December 2012 and it shows his commitment to the club. Sean McCarthy has also extended and apart from being an instrumental team member, we are sure he will progress another level as he matures and develops.

"Davie Allan has proved to be a match-winner on numerous occasions and must be the one of the fastest players in the Highland League, his pace on the wings and through the middle is phenomenal.

"Steven Anderson has been a fans' favourite since we signed him from Lybster FC in 2014, he is our joint top goal scorer so far this term, level with Sam on 15 strikes and well on the way to surpassing the 20 goals he scored for us last season.

"Right back Danny Mackay has extended his contract until the end of the 2019/20 season and given that level of commitment it looks like we will see him at Harmsworth Park for many a year to come."

Academy welcomed Fort William as our first footers for 2017. Two goals from Gary Weir and Steven Anderson secured the three points to notch up Academy's 6th league win on the trot.

Fort proved to be a tough nut to crack. Gary Weir thought he'd opened the scoring in the 14th minute but he was deemed to be off-side as he stuck the ball home after keeper Douglas Maclennan failed to keep a hold of a Richard Macadie shot.

Two minutes later Michael Steven headed a Gary Manson cross straight to keeper Maclennan.

Next up was Richard Macadie who got his head to a Sam Mackay cross but the ball agonisingly went just past the post.

Gary Weir broke the deadlock on the half-hour. James Pickles worked some space for himself on the right flank and swung in a great cross that Weir slotted home.

1 - 0

In a rare foray into the Academy half Fort William broke out of defence but Scott Davidson skied his effort from the edge of the box well over the cross-bar.

Just before the half-time whistle Weir had a great chance to double the advantage but he headed a cross from Andrew Hardwick over the bar.

Chairman's New Year Message

James Innes sized

Well another year has passed and we welcome in 2017 very much the same way in a footballing sense as we entered 2016, we reached the 3rd round of The Scottish Cup again and the North of Scotland Cup is still in the trophy cabinet. The fact that the competition for it is being played for at the end of the season doesn't matter to us, as it's something we never tire of seeing in the boardroom! With it and the Highland League Cup still to play for, plus possibly a chance to play in the Irn-bru cup depending on our final league position, Gordon, Tichie and Ross still have a lot to gee the boys up for the remainder of this campaign.

The U17s excelled themselves and won their league with a perfect 'clean sweep' record of played 16 won 16. Unfortunately the play-off final didn't go our way against the East division winners Banks o Dee, but James Robertson and Mark McKenzie's team can hold their heads high to a resounding achievement and with the Caithness United 13s and Academy 15s providing a yearly conveyor belt of talent coming through the youth system, we have great hopes for the future. The youth coaches at all levels are doing a great job for which we are very grateful.

As ever there have been sad times at the club this year and the passing of supporters, ex players and committee is always felt by the club.

This year we lost two very hard working serving committee members, George Ross and Austin MacNiven. George was a 'weel kent face' and did a near sentry duty at the top gate with a quip or constructive parking advice for many a fan, both ours and visiting ones!

Austin may not have been so well known to the supporters at the club at present, but he was instrumental in securing Wick Academy's place in the Highland League back in 1994, utilising the respect he had earned as our North of Scotland representative and the cordial manner in which he conducted himself at meetings to his peers. I attended his funeral in Ardersier along with Clair Harper, ex Chairman Alistair Gunn and our present North of Scotland representative David Taylor. Hearing how fondly the minister relayed Austin's love for our Club in his eulogy made the journey even more worthwhile.

My 3 year tenure as Chairman ends in May where I can choose to stand for re-election at the AGM or not. I'm happy with the way the Club has moved the last two and a half years and the proof of the pudding is that a manager has never achieved so much and the Treasurer has never been happier! At present, I'm happy to extend my position at Harmsworth Park, but I've decided that should anyone wish my role, they are more than welcome to stand for election unopposed by me, as I have no desire to compete for a role that takes 100s of hours of my time and lots of other efforts besides. In the event that a new Chairman was elected for the post, I would hope to still be welcome to serve on the committee.

The annual 'get it off my chest' topic last year was the minority that choose to use social media as a platform to vent slur at a hard working volunteer committee who due to the time we give up are among the clubs biggest fans, with the best interests, knowledge and bigger picture of what's best for WAFC.

This year it's training facilities, or more accurately, the lack of training facilities. The Wick High School all weather pitch seems to be a pawn in a secret argument between Highland Council, Wick High School and the building contractors which has led to a locked gate at the all weather now for nearly 3 months. Despite de-bunking the reasons given why no one including us, Caithness Rugby Club, Caithness United and East End are forbidden to use the park we still find ourselves with no winter training facilities in Wick. There's government departments and quangos spending hundreds of thousands a year on campaigns to encourage us to walk our kids to school, not give them too much sugar on their breakfasts and even how to hide vegetables in their meals, yet in Wick they can't train or get a game of football or rugby on the only surface suitable. 5 a day is yet another campaign, but I'd say this is taking the pea! I've never encountered bureaucratic cack-handedness quite like it.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who volunteers at the club, of which there must be roughly 40, the sponsors and supporters who help the club out financially and by coming to watch the team play and last but not least to the management, staff and players who all contribute to the performances on the park which is what we are all here for ultimately.

I wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2017 on behalf of everyone at Wick Academy FC.

C'mon è Scorries!

James

Academy started 2017 with a fine 3-1 win over Inverurie Locos at Harlaw Park. A double from Sam Mackay and a goal from Marc Macgregor had Academy 3-0 up with 20 minutes left to play. Daniel Crisp pulled a goal back for the home side but it wasn't enough for Academy to claim their 5th league win on the spin.

In the opening minutes of the game both Mark Souter and Gary Manson had shots that were wide of target.

Just past the quarter hour mark Sean McCarthy was in action in the Academy goal making saves from Locos skipper Neil McLean and then Joe McCabe to keep the scores at zero.

Academy broke the deadlock on 35 minutes when Sam Mackay lashed his shot into the corner of the net from 25 yards out for his 14th goal of the season.

0 - 1

Colin Charlesworth had a chance just before the break to square things as he broke through on goal but McCarthy made a great blocking save.

Half Time - Inverurie Locos 0 - Wick Academy 1

Locos made a change at the start of the second half, Stephen Jeffrey was substituted for Ross Anderson.

Stagecoach Sponsor New Academy Dugouts

Wick Academy are delighted that Stagecoach have agreed to be our dugout sponsor for the next year.

Assistant Operations Manager for Caithness John Gunn says "Stagecoach in Caithness are delighted to sponsor Wick Academy's new dugouts and would like to wish Academy all the very best for the season ahead."

James Innes said "The old dugouts had attracted a bit of cult status, but for the wrong reasons, the one long hard bench although in perfect condition wasn't the most comfortable and with more subs available to select we felt an upgrade was overdue. Thankfully the generosity of Stagecoach could not have arrived at a better time and I'd like to thank them and particularly John Gunn for facilitating the deal. Hopefully both our team and our visitors are as comfortable as John's passengers in their new seats!"

John and his son Bruin are pictured beside the new dugouts with Wick Academy Chairman James Innes and Vice Chairman Ewan MacKenzie.

Academy travelled to Christie Park today without the services of Sam Mackay, Alan Farquhar and Andrew Hardwick, but despite that they racked up a great 5-1 win, our best ever result at Christie Park. Four first half goals from Davie Allan, two from Steven Anderson and Richard Macadie more or less had the game wrapped up by half-time. Allan went on to claim his second of the match in the second half, and Glenn Murison pulled a consolation back for the home side seven minutes from full time.

The result is Academy's fourth league win on the bounce and the three points pushes Academy a couple of places up the table back into 6th spot.

Academy started the game on the front foot and created the first chance in the opening minutes. Davie Allan had a neat interchange of passes with Danny Mackay before teeing up James Pickles, but he fired over the crossbar from 12 yards out.

Huntly went more or less straight up the other end and Jordan Morrice was played in one-on-one with Sean McCarthy, but McCarthy made a good block.

Academy opened the scoring in the 9th minute. Andrew Mackay had a surging run down the left wing before squaring the ball across goal for Davie Allan to tap in from 6 yards out.

0 - 1

Paul Napier had a chance to level the scores but he shot wide of target.

On 18 minutes Academy doubled their advantage. Davie Allan fired a dangerous cross into the Huntly box from the right flank which the Huntly back line failed to properly clear. Steven Anderson latched onto it and he hammered home from close range.

Academy were without the services of Michael Steven, Alan Farquhar and Gary Weir today, but still had enough in the tank to chalk up a 3-1 win over visitors Clachnacuddin. Youngsters Brandon Sinclair and Colin Henstridge were drafted in and both got game-time in the latter stages of the match.

In a fairly even first half neither side could find the net, but three second half goals from Sam Mackay, Steven Anderson and Davie Allan sealed the three points, Academy's third league win on the bounce.

Substitute Liam Shewan pulled a consolation goal back for Clach with two minutes of time left on the clock.

Academy were first to threaten when Grant Steven jumped highest from a corner ball but his header went just wide of target.

On 23 minutes Clach had a couple of chances. Gary Manson managed to get something on a Daniel MacLennan shot to deflect the ball wide of McCarthy's left hand post for a corner. Blair Lawrie swung in the resulting corner and Richard Macadie cleared it off the line.

Five minutes later and Academy had a really strong shout for a penalty kick when it looked as if Steven Anderson had his heels clipped from him inside the box, but referee Billy Baxter waved aside the Academy claims.

Academy came close to breaking the deadlock when a Danny Mackay cross found Marc MacGregor about 12 yards from goal. His shot looked goal-bound but it deflected off David McGurk and over the crossbar for a corner. James Pickles the headed the corner kick just wide of target.

Half Time - Wick Academy 0 - Clachnacuddin 0

A minute onto the second half Blair Lawrie whipped in another great corner kick, this time it bounced off the top of the crossbar.

Just passed the hour mark Academy took the lead. In an Academy attack Sam Mackay was fouled just outside the penalty area. Mackay expertly bent the free-kick around the wall and although keeper John Campbell did manage to get a hand to it, he couldn't keep it out.

Wick Academy's Scottish Cup run for this season came to an end today following a 2-0 defeat at the hands of League 2 side Stirling Albion.

Blair Henderson opened the scoring for the Binos 3 minutes before the half time break.

Academy had a real go in the second half with Davie Allan coming closest but his effort was touched onto the post by keeper Chris Smith.

Substitute Dylan Nguene Bikey scored Stirling's second to secure their place on the 4th round with 6 minutes left to play.

Academy won a penalty in the closing stages but Stirling keeper Chris Smith saved Sam Mackay's spot-kick attempt.

Academy started the game very well and create the first chance after only 6 minutes. Steven Anderson collected the ball on the left flank before cutting into the Stirling box. He found half a yard from his covering defenders and got a shot on target that keeper Chris Smith blocked. The loose ball was then cleared from danger.

Gary Manson delivered a great ball into the box that Grant Steven rose highest for but his header went straight to the Bino's keeper.

The home side grew into the first half and Grant Steven had to be sharp to make a great tackle to deny Marc McKenzie getting a shot on goal.

Calvin Colquhoun hit the Academy side netting with a header as Stirling began to pressure the Academy goal.

Ross Kavanagh had a smashing run into the Academy box getting a powerful shot on target that Sean McCarthy saved with his feet.

Three minutes before the interval Stirling broke the deadlock. A high cross was swung into the Academy box. Sean McCarthy and Blair Henderson rose for it and McCarthy couldn't grasp the ball. It fell to Henderson with his back to goal. He turned on it and bundled home as he fell to the ground from 6 yards out.

A second hat-trick on the bounce from Sam Mackay saw off visitors Keith today with a 3-1 win. Sean McCarthy made a welcome return for Academy between the sticks, his first start appearance since the 24th September. The win lifts Academy above Fraserburgh into 5th spot in the table.

Academy had the better of the opening exchanges and took the lead on 19 minutes. Davie Allan was chopped down in the box and Sam Mackay converted the spot kick.

Keith then came into the game and had the better of the reminder of the half. Good pressure saw Luke Barbour tap in at the back post to square the scores after McCarthy had made an initial good save.

Academy had the better of the second half though and further goals from Sam Mackay, a shot from outside the box and a direct free-kick, secured the three points.

Academy started on the attack and on 19 minutes Davie Allan showed his blistering pace storming into the Keith box. Fraser Hall tried to stick with him but ended up taking him to the ground with a tackle from behind and referee Douglas Ross had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot. Sam Mackay converted sending keeper Daniel Bell the wrong way.

1 - 0

6 minutes later Academy had a great chance to double their advantage. Davie Allan left four defenders in his wake as he tore up the right wing. He delivered a perfect cross for James Pickles but he fired his shot over the bar.

On 38 minutes the visitors levelled the scores after a period of sustained pressure on the Academy goal. Donald Fraser got a powerful shot on target that Sean McCarthy could only parry back out onto the path of Keith's top goal scorer Luke Barbour and he tucked home from 6 yards out.

Academy went on a goal-spree today hammering Rothes 9-0. The score equals our highest league result, last achieved against Strathspey Thistle at Seafield Park in August 2013. Sam Mackay knocked in 4 of today's goals, 3 of them from the penalty spot. That's 6 penalties in the last 2 games that Academy have been awarded, and Sam Mackay has scored from 5 of them. Marc MacGregor also grabbed a double today with the other goals coming from Gary Weir, Steven Anderson and an own-goal (scorer unknown).

Academy started on the front-foot and created the first chance of the game after only 2 minutes. A Gary Manson cross from the right wing into the Rothes box found Marc MacGregor and his glancing header came off the post.

9 minutes later Richard Macadie had another chance for Academy but his shot from 12 yards out went just wide of the target after he'd been teed-up by Davie Allan.

Academy opened the scoring on 16 minutes. Macadie on the right wing played a neat one-two with Gary Manson allowing Macadie room to cross into the box. Rothes keeper Sean Macintosh couldn't hold the ball and it dropped at the feet of Marc MacGregor who had the easiest of tap-ins from 4 yards out.

0 - 1

On 24 minutes Academy doubled their advantage. Sam Mackay played the ball out wide to Davie Allan. Allan whipped the ball in on target and it came off the bar and hit a Rothes defender in a crowded penalty area and bounced back into the net for an own-goal (scorer unknown).

A fantastic second half performance from Academy saw them come from a goal behind against visitors Whitehill Welfare, running out 4-1 winners, to book their place in the 3rd round of the William Hill Scottish Cup. The draw takes place on Tuesday at 6pm.

The visitors took the lead after 18 minutes through Scott McCulloch. A screamer from James Pickles 8 minutes after the re-start took the scores level before two penalties from Sam Mackay within the space of 10 minutes turned the game. Richard Macadie came on as a sub on 83 minutes and scored with a cracking strike with his first kick of the ball. Macadie could have grabbed a brace but had a penalty saved by keeper Bryan Young.

Indiscipline from Whitehill saw them finish the game with only eight men and three further bookings.

Academy started playing up the Harmsworth slope and set-out at a good tempo. Within 7 minutes they created the first chance of the game when Steven Anderson flashed a drive just passed keeper Bryan Young's right hand post.

A minute later James Pickles had the ball in the net for the Scorries but it didn't stand, ruled off-side.

Whitehill broke from an Academy free-kick on the edge of their own box. Scott Gormley set the attack off with Connor McGregor teeing up Scott McCulloch and from fully 30 yards out his right foot shot cracked off the face of Michael MacCallum's right hand post before running across the goal-line and out for a goal-kick.

In the next attach Whitehill opened the scoring. Kevin Keane dinked a ball through to the powerful McCulloch who held off Grant Steven and ran in on goal. MaCallum came to narrow the angle and he managed to get a foot on McCulloch's low shot but it wasn't enough to stop the ball trundling over the line just inside his right hand post.

0 - 1

Davie Allan burst through the Whitehill defence but could only shoot straight to keeper Young and minutes later Young was again on-hand this time making a great save from James Pickles. Pickles had been played into the heart of the box by Sam Mackay and he must have thought he'd scored, but Young did fantastically well from close range to get a right foot out to block Pickles attempt.

Welfare could only half clear a corner that fell to Gary Manson just outside the box. He fired in a shot that John Williams blocked with his elbow and he was booked for his efforts. Sam Mackay curled the free-kick over the wall and Young dived to his right to make another good stop pushing the ball wide of target.

Academy were forced to make a change with Grant Steven coming off injured and he was replaced by Andrew Hardwick.

A clinical Cove Rangers fired six passed Academy today to clock up another three points. That's the first game away from home this season that Academy have lost. Academy were without the services of; Sam Mackay, Alan Farquhar, Sean McCarthy, Ross Allan and Michael Petrie but that said Cove took their chances very well today and deserved their win.

Cove opened the scoring after only 3 minutes. Darryn Kelly send the ball down the right wing sending Mitchel Megginson on his way. He drove to the bye-line and sent over a low cross that Harry Milne who was unmarked at the back post and he side footed home from 8 yards out.

1 - 0

Cove capitalised from slack play in the Academy defence which allowed Megginson in one-on-one with keeper Michael MacCallum. MacCallum came out and narrowed the angle and knocked the shot away with his foot for a corner.

Just before the half-hour the home side doubled their advantage. Megginson was proving to be a real hand-full and he burst down the right wing and his cross into the box found the on-rushing Blair Yule and fired the ball high into the net from 12 yards out.

2 - 0

Two minutes later Cove knocked in number three. The move started from Megginson who picked the ball up and drove into the box. He went around the advancing MacCallum and got a shot on target that Grant Steven cleared off the line for a corner. From the corner MacCallum punched it out to the edge of the box for Blair Yule who swung it into the back post for Stuart Walker to head home.

3 - 0

Fraserburgh were today's visitors to Harmsworth Park and a second half goal from Paul Campbell was enough for them to bag the three points. On the balance of play with the chances they created Broch were deserving of their win. Keeper Michael MacCallum, who is on a short-term load from Strathspey Thistle, made several good stops and Gary Harris had a flashing cross-goal attempt that came off the post. Harris received a straight red card from referee Alex Shepherd deep into injury time following a tussle with Michael Steven.

Academy create a chance straight from the kick-off. Steven Anderson latching onto a through ball but his shot on the half-volley went straight down the throat of Broch keeper Paul Leask.

Michael MacCallum was called into the action on 17 minutes when he made a great save from Paul Campbell to keep the scores at zero.

3 minutes before the interval MacCallum again denied Campbell. Leask launched a clearance up-field that Campbell directed on target but MacCallum did well to get his foot to it and the teams went into the break all square.

A patched-up Academy side recovered from a three-goal half-time deficit to earn a remarkable win by scoring five times in the second half against Forres. With Sean McCarthy likely to be out for another 4 weeks Academy have signed keeper Michael MacCallum on a short-term loan deal from Strathspey Thistle. He started between the sticks. Regulars James Pickles, Gary Manson, Ross Allan and Michael Steven were all unavailable.

Forres broke the deadlock in the 10th minute when Stuart Soane turned home a close-range effort at the back post.

0 - 1

It did not take long for the hosts to double the advantage. In the 17th minute, Simon Allan whipped a corner into the front post and Soane attacked the delivery with determination to glance a header into the net and give Wick a tough task to get back into the game.

0 - 2

Just five minutes later, Lee Fraser scored with a superb looping header from the edge of the area to put his team firmly in control.

Wick Academy and Deveronvale played out a 2-2 draw at Harmsworth Park today, that's only the seconds draw the sides have had in 45 league games. Sean McCarthy will be out for 3 or 4 weeks for a minor medical procedure, so younger brother Danny started between the sticks. Academy sported their new away kit for the first time, the design for which is based on the primary amber and blue colours of the Caithness flag.

Academy got their nose in front after only 4 minutes. James Pickles set Sam Mackay free and he ran in on goal before powering home a low drive from 12 yards out.

1 - 0

The visitors however drew level eight minutes later. Vale won a corner on their left which was swung into the box. The ball evaded everyone before bouncing in front of Danny McCarthy, coming off his chest and into the net for an unfortunate own-goal.

1 - 1

Steven Anderson had a toe-poke to keeper Blanchard before Academy were awarded a penalty. Paul Sutherland bundled over Danny Mackay in the Vale box and referee Billy Baxter pointed to the spot. Richard Macadie took the responsibility for the spot kick but keeper James Blanchard guessed the right way and dived to his left to make a good save.

New Away Strip To Be Launched At Vale Game Print E-mail
WAFC Other News
Written by John Briskham
Thursday, 29 September 2016

In the summer Wick Academy FC launched a competition and wrote to each primary school in Caithness offering every child the opportunity to design our new away strip. The only constraint was that the strip had to contain the colours of the newly launched Caithness flag, with amber and blue taking priority over the black of the home kit.

We were overwhelmed with the response receiving over 300 entries. The ideas the children came up with were fantastic and several of the designs caught our attention and gave us the inspiration required to be able to work with our kit supplier, EV2 Sportswear, to come up with a bespoke design.

We picked two competition winners, Isaac Seddon, P3 from Noss Primary for the jersey, and Matthew Laird, P5 from Mount Pleasant Primary for the shorts and socks. Both will receive an away jersey with the new design, and will be invited to be mascots for the launch game.

The new kit will be launched by Anne Dunnett , Lord Lieutenant of Caithness, who will be in attendance as a piper leads the team out at our home game against Deveronvale on Saturday the 1st October.  The new away top will be available for sale at the Harmsworth Park that day, and thereafter along with our other Wick Academy merchandise from Driftwood in Wick and Thurso, who are our new merchandising outlet following the retirement of Stewart Gunn.

Academy Chairman James Innes said ‘we were literally astounded by the response and the decision was incredibly hard, some of the entries must have taken hours to do and we'd like to thank each and every child who took the time and effort to submit their design' James added, ‘It affirmed our belief that Wick Academy are a county wide supported team, and to promote this we have incorporated the Caithness Flag in to the nape of the top' said James.  James went on to express the Clubs thanks to John Gunn & Co.  ‘Stewart Gunn was our main merchandising outlet for many years and we would like to thank him for everything he did for us, not only the merchandise sales but also as ticket seller for our four cup finals, and also our weekly Scorrie Scoop lottery ticket. We wish him all the very best for a long and happy retirement'.

Academy made the 700 mile round trip to Lowland League side Dalbeattie Star and the Scorries booked their place in the second round draw with a fine 3-1 win. Both Alan brothers were missing today, Davie was suspended and Ross is out injured after breaking a bone in his arm in last weekend's game against Nairn.

James Pickles set the ball rolling with the opener and Macadie doubled the lead with a penalty. The home side had Lewis Sloan sent off at the start of the second half, but a Tommy Muir penalty had them straight back in it on 70 minutes. Sean McCarthy pulled off two great saves to deny Dalbeattie the equaliser before Steven Anderson secured the win. Star ended the game with only nine men when Connor Graham picked up his second booking of the match deep into injury time.

The first half-chance of the game fell to Academy on 17 minutes. A Michael Steven throw-in on the right found Sam Mackay on the edge of the box. Mackay knocked the ball back to Gary Manson but he fired his attempt from 25 yards out over the crossbar.

A minute later and Steven Anderson almost found the opener. Gary Weir played the ball onto Anderson who marched into the box and went one-on-one with keeper Vinnie Parker. Parker came and narrowed the angle, blocked Anderson's shot and then gathered the re-bound.

On 21 minutes Academy took the lead. Greig Thorborn gave away a free kick and was booked in the process. Danny Mackay floated it onto the mix and Dalbeattie could only clear to the edge of their box. It fell to Michael Steven who headed it back in for James Pickles who went one-on-one with the keeper and Pickles stayed composed and although Parker got a touch on the ball he couldn't prevent it ending up in the back of the net.

0 - 1

On the half-hour Academy had another chance. Mackay crossed into the box from the right and it was knocked into the path of Macadie but his first-time volley flew just wide of the target.

The home side created their first real chance on 36 minutes. A ball into the Academy box found Jamie McHarrie but his shot smacked off the back of Michael Steven and Academy cleared the danger.

Academy ran out 2-1 winners at Station Park today. A first half goal from Steven Anderson, his 8th of the season, had Academy in control at half time.

Ross Naismith pulled back the equaliser for the hosts with only 6 minutes left to play, but Davie Allan tucked in the winner 2 minutes from full time to give Academy all three points.

Academy started the game well and had a great chance to open the scoring after only three minutes. Defender Jack MacLean threw his body on the line as he blocked a Steven Anderson shot from only 8 yards out.

A few minutes later a low ball across the face of the Academy goal delivered by Gary Kerr only just evaded the outstretched Dylan Mackenzie.

Kerr was in the action again as his shot from a tight angle was well saved by Sean McCarthy.

Good defending by Steven MacKenzie kept the scores at nil, as he blocked a shot from Marc MacGregor.

Academy took the lead five minutes from the half-time break. A Sam Mackay free kick was collected by Steven Anderson with his back to goal. He turned on a sixpence and smacked a 20 yard screamer into the net.

Derby night under the Harmsworth lights attracted a crowd of about 700 who witnessed Brora run out 2-1 winners.

Zander Sutherland latched onto the end of a goal kick to open the scoring after only 5 minutes, and a deflected Andrew Greig shot put the visitors in at the break with a two goal lead.

Davie Allan pulled a goal back on 67 minutes, but unlike last year's encounter Academy couldn't find an equalizer.

Academy were first to threaten and it took a spectacular Joe Malin save to deny Sam Mackay the opening goal. Macadie squared a cross for Mackay on the edge of the box and his shot looked destined for the top right hand corner but Malin went air-born and tipped the ball onto the bar and over for a corner.

In the next move Brora took the lead. Malin launched a goal kick and Zander Sutherland nipped in between Andrew Hardwick and Danny Mackay before firing passed McCarthy into the bottom corner of the net from 15 yards out.

0 - 1

Steven Anderson almost restored parity with a fine header that whistled just passed the post.

Brora won a corner on 24 minutes which fell to Andrew Greig and his 20 yard drive took a flick off a defender leaving McCarthy with no chance as the ball flew passed him and into the net.

Academy travelled to the picturesque Claggan Park without the services of James Pickles, Gary Weir, Danny McCarthy and Sean McCarthy. James More filled in between the sticks, Ross Allan and Andrew Mackay also made the starting eleven.

Academy had the three points in the bag before the half-time whistle had been blown. Gary Manson opened the scoring with his first goal of the season before Sam Mackay doubled the advantage. In the space of 16 minutes Steven Anderson helped himself to a hat-trick, before Richard Macadie capped a super first half performance by scoring the 6th.

So game over, not a chance, Fort were having none of it! Martin Munro pulled a goal back 6 minutes after the re-start and two goals from Scott Davidson in the space of 11 minutes saw Fort half the deficit.

A few minutes later though Davie Allan knocked in his first goal of the season to settle the ship and restore a 4 goal cushion. Alan Farquhar also got his name on the score-sheet for the first time this season with the final goal in injury time to wrap up a great afternoon's entertainment.

Gary Manson set the ball rolling with a low drive under keeper David Harrison after 9 minutes. 2 minutes later Sam Mackay showed a great touch clipping the ball into the net to double the advantage.

Steven Anderson then got in on the act scoring a great hat-trick. He opened with an arrowed shot from 12 yards, and then converted two more after getting onto then end of pin-point through-balls.

Richard Macadie capped a fine first half performance curling in a well taken shot from the edge of the box passed a helpless Harrison.

Half Time - Fort William 0 - Wick Academy 6

Fort came out fighting at the start of the second half and with 6 minutes played they pulled a goal back. Martin Munro broke into the box and made no mistake slotting passed James More.

Scott Davidson then bagged a double, the first from a well stuck shot from 20 yards, and then he got his head to a crossed ball for his second.

Davie Allan settled the game with his first goal of the season with a well taken strike from the right side of the penalty area, before Alan Farquhar headed home the final goal in injury time.

Wick Academy and Inverurie Locos played out a 1-1 draw at Harmsworth Park today. That's only the third draw between the two sides in 31 League games. Richard Macadie opened the scoring on 14 minutes and Stephen Jeffrey levelled 11 minutes later. Locos hit the post twice but neither side had their shooting boots on today and the game ended with the points shared.

Academy opened the scoring on 14 minutes. Richard Macadie sent Davie Allan on his way down the right flank. Allan tore into the box and his cut-back was blocked, but fell to Macadie and he hammed it on the half-volley into the bottom right hand corner of Scott Mathieson's net.

Locos equalised 11 minutes later. Neil McLean chipped the ball to the back post for an easy tap-in from Stephen Jeffrey.

Joe McCabe had a shot that smacked off the post and ran across the face of goal as Locos came close to scoring again.

Half Time - Wick Academy 1 - Inverurie Locos 1

Goal scoring opportunities in the second half were few and far between. Locos did hit the post again on the hour mark and Sean McCarthy made a good save to deny McCabe.

Locos did have the ball in the net when McCarthy fumbled but referee Alan Proctor adjudged the Wick keep to have been fouled.

The only other action of note was in the 90th minute when Mark Souter picked up his second booking of the game leaving Locos a man down for the final few minutes.

Academy made the mid-week to trek to Seafield Park without the services of Gary Manson who was suspended following his sending off against Huntly, as well as Grant Steven and Danny McCarthy who were both injured. Sam Mackay returned from his two game suspension and Andrew Hardwick got start in defence.

Neither side could create a clear chance within the first half hour with the first real opportunity coming on 34 minutes for Academy. From the half-way line Sam Mackay pinged a ball up to Richard Macadie on the edge of the Strathspey box. Macadie took a touch to settle before getting a shot off which went just wide of the post.

A few minutes later Strathspey had their first shot on target. A throw-in near the corner flag on the Strathspey left wing found Owen Cairns on the edge of the box but he shot straight to Sean McCarthy who made a comfortable save.

On 38 minutes referee David Baxter awarded Academy a penalty. It came from a ball over the top to Davie Allan on the edge of the box. He was bundled down by a Strathspey defender and after consulting with his assistant referee Baxter booked keeper David Aitchison for something presumably said off the ball. Macadie took the spot kick and it stroked it passed the keeper into his left hand side of the net.

Well this game had it all, and then some! Eight goals, two missed penalties, two red cards and an action filled second half that was a roller-coaster!

Two goals from Dennis Wyness had the visitors two up after 19 minutes before Marc MacGregor pulled one back. A free header from a corner got Sean Webb onto the score card to put Huntly in at the break two goals to the good.

Two goals in three second half minutes from Michael Steven and Richard Macadie had Academy level before a great run and strike from Steven Anderson deep into injury time had the Harmsworth Park faithful on their feet as it looked to be a sure-fire winner. Huntly however went back up the field and with the last kick of the match their new summer signing Elliot Duff kept his cool in the box to finish the game in style and ensure the points were shared.

Academy started the game sharply and with only three minutes played had a very strong case for a penalty kick. Steven Anderson broke into the box and keeper Andrew Pennycook looked to take all of the man and none of the ball, but referee Graham Fraser waved play on.

Pennycook was in action again minutes later palming away a shot from Anderson that looked goal-bound.

Pickles was the next to have a crack and again Pennycook was on hand to make the save and gather the ball at the second attempt.

Huntly opened the scoring on 12 minutes. A long kick-out bounced over the top of Grant Steven allowing veteran striker Dennis Wyness to nip in and he made no mistake in finding the net.

0 - 1

Pickles set up Anderson in Academy's next attack but Anderson's curling shot flew just passed the outside of the post.

On 19 minutes Wyness again found the net. Academy tried to play the ball out of defence but a slack pass from Alan Farquhar allowed Wyness in on goal. His first attempt was blocked and the ball spun up in the air, but he hammered home at the second attempt.

A Harmsworth Park crowd of about 200 turned out for Gary Weir's testimonial against a SPFL Legends and friends team captained by ex-Academy Manager Barry Wilson, and managed by his father Bobby. Those in attendance witnessed a cracking game. The Legends may no longer have had the steam to run things down for the full 90 minutes, but all the touches, vision and range of passing was still there for all to see.

Richard Macadie was first to get a crack on goal. Steven Anderson delivered from the right wing for Macadie but Michael Gray punched his effort away. Davie Allan followed up but screwed his shot wide of target.

On 11 minutes a James Pickles shot took a defection off the foot of Gordon Connelly. It looped over the top of Gray and bounced off the top of the crossbar before falling to Steven Anderson who smashed it home but he was ruled off-side.

A minute later Academy Manager Gordon Connelly clipped Gary Weirs heels just inside the penalty box and Academy were awarded a penalty. Richard Macadie took the spot kick which crept just inside Gray's right hand post.

1 - 0

On the quarter hour neat foot-work by Weir on the outside of the Legends box lead to academy's second. After Weir had escaped the attention of Gary Campbell he slid the ball wide for Gary Manson who cut it back into the path of Weir who took a touch before slamming home with his trusty right foot.

2 - 0

Macadie and Davie Allan combined in Academy's next move which saw a Macadie shot saved by Gray.

Gordon Connelly was forced into shuffling the pack today. Sam Mackay sat out the first of his two game suspension. Grant Steven was not fit following the knock he took last Saturday against Lossiemouth and both Danny Mackay and Alan Farquhar were unavailable. Andrew Hardwick and James Maclean made the starting eleven.

Neither side could find the net as they played out a 0-0 drawn, Academy's first scoreless drawn since playing Fraserburgh at Harmsworth Park in November 2015.

The home side didn't have an effort during the entire match that troubled Academy keeper Sean McCarthy.

John Campbell in the Clach goal had one good save to deny Steven Anderson who produced a neat turn before getting his shot on target.

James MacLean also had a chance to snatch the points but his effort from 20 yards sailed over the cross bar.

Academy's unbeaten start to the season was ended by visitors Lossiemouth today as the Coasters claimed the three points to keep their 100% record intact. As well as the disappointment of the defeat Academy will also now be without the services of Sam Mackay for the next two games as he was sent off, and Grant Steven also hobbled off with an injury and will be doubtful for next Saturday's game away to Clachnacuddin.

Academy took the lead on 11 minutes. Ross Allan whipped in a great corner that looked as if it glanced off the post and after a mad scramble in the Lossie box it fell to Michael Steven and he smashed a low drive passed keeper Darren McConnachie.

1 - 0

Three minutes later the Coasters were level. Scott Miller made good ground down the right flank and delivered into the box. Academy failed to clear and Connor Macaulay knocked in from 4 yards out.

1 - 1

Just before the half hour mark Sam Mackay almost fired Academy back into the lead when he unleashed a cracking 30 yard strike on target which keeper McConnachie did really well to get a hand to and he tipped it over the crossbar.

Mackay came close again a few minutes later bus his shot was safely held by McConnachie.

Academy continued the excellent start to the 2016/17 SHFL campaign, following up the 2-0 home win v Turriff with a convincing away triumph at North Lodge Park, home of everybody's favourite to win the championship. The result was achieved by three clinically executed goals, the first from Gary Weir after just 7 minutes and then on the hour, after a spell when Formartine threatened to get back into the game, Steven Anderson volleyed high into the net from 25 yards. Anderson completed the rout in stoppage time.

The visitors survived an early threat by packing the six yard box while two of Formartine's highly rated strike force, Neil Gauld and Garry Wood, each swung a boot at the ball bouncing between them.

The home fans were stunned in the 7th minute when Davie Allan ran deep into opposing territory and played a one- two with Richard Macadie before flicking the ball into the penalty area ahead of Weir. Keeper Andy Reid was quickly off his line to block Weir's first effort at point-blank range but the stocky striker coolly side-stepped to his left and slid the ball into the unguarded net.

Around the 15 minute mark Allan again sprinted past the home defence but although the pressure led to a couple of corners, one each side, there were no shots Reid's goal.

Formartine fought back but when Gauld raced forward Macadie had retreated to the 18 yard line to tackle him. Jonathan Crawford went forward for a corner kick and rose highest near the spot to head the ball down but it was wide of the target. Weir was back to head away a free kick from Paul Lawson and keeper Sean McCarthy was twice called upon, stretching to catch a high cross and diving forward to grab a low cross, both these efforts from Scott Ferries on the Formartine right.

After 37 minutes, Davie Allan relieved the pressure sending Weir clear on the right. Weir cut inside two defenders but from the side of the area pulled his shot beyond the back post. Macadie set up Allan whose low drive was only inches wide.

On the stroke of half time Jamie Michie ghosted in from the right almost to the six yard box but hooked his shot wide.

Wick Academy got their 23rd League campaign off to the best possible start beating visitors Turriff United by two goals to nil. Steven Anderson powered home a bullet header after only 4 minutes and Richard Macadie doubled the advantage a minute from the half-time break. Turriff rarely threatened the Wick goal throughout the 90 minutes.

Prior to kick-off a minutes silence was observed for long-standing Academy committee member George Ross.

Academy started on the front-foot and in the 4th minute Sam Mackay swung in a cross from the left flank. Turriff defenders doubled up on Steven Anderson but they couldn't prevent him rising highest and from 12 yards out he powered home his header under the cross-bar passed the outstretched Kevin Main.

1 - 0

Richard Macadie and Sam Mackay both had half-chances which they fired high of target before Mackay had a great opportunity to double the lead. Good play in the middle of the park between Davie Allan and James Pickles saw Mackay being released through the middle of the Turriff defence. He ran into the box one-on-one with keeper Main but fired straight into Main's body.

Academy didn't give Turriff a sniff in the first half with McCarthy making comfortable work of the little he had to do. Allen MacKenzie had a go from 25 yards out but his attempt whistled passed the outside of the post.

A minute before the half-time break good Academy pressure saw the ball worked into the Turriff box by Gary Manson. Several Academy players looked to have shooting chances as Turriff failed to clear. Steven Anderson had his attempt blocked before it eventually fell to Richard Macadie in the middle of the penalty area and he made no mistake firing passed the hand of Main and into his bottom left hand corner of the net.

Ken Wood does a roundup of Academy's pre-season friendlies

While the rest of us were lazing in front of a TV cheering on Iceland and Wales, the Academy players were put through their paces to build fitness and strength at the start of their pre-season.

A couple of away warm up games were played in early July. Davie Allan scored a consolation goal when we lost 2-1 to the Ross County Under 21 side at Dingwall while Ross Allan, Andrew Mackay and Gary Weir found the net in a 3-1 win at Invergordon.

Caithness AFA side Castletown helpfully fitted in a friendly among their County League games on Thursday 14 July. Marc MacGregor notched a hat-trick and Richard Macadie scored two in an 8-1 win, the other goals netted by Danny Mackay, Davie Allan and Andrew Mackay.

Home fans had their first chance to see the team in a midday kick off on County Show Day 16 July.

WICK ACADEMY 1 ORKNEY 1 (Academy won 5-4 on penalties)

Academy lifted their first silverware of the new season after Sam Mackay netted his team's sixth spot-kick of the shoot-out to claim the Ken Green Challenge Cup.

Wick enjoyed plenty of first half possession, taking the lead in the 18th minute when Davie Allan cut in from the right and after slipping on the greasy surface, regained his footing to steer the ball across to Sam Mackay who stroked it in from six yards.

In the second half Academy won a series of corners on the left and Gary Manson twice ran down the right and supplied good crosses but the Islanders' rearguard dealt efficiently with these threats. The closest to another goal was at the top end around the hour mark when a well struck 25 yard drive from Owen Rendall was smothered by Wick keeper Sean McCarthy.

The only real excitement for the 200 fans came just four minutes from time when Wick defender Michael Steven tangled with Orkney's substitute forward Jamie Flett near the penalty spot. After consulting his linesman, referee Ben Dempster awarded a penalty kick which Ryan McFerran duly drove into the bottom corner of the net for the equaliser.

Orkney had the upper hand for much of the shoot-out. Daniel Harcus and Richard Macadie duly converted the first kicks and McFerran made it 2-1. Keeper Cameron McConnachie dived to his right to hold Gary Weir's tame effort from Wick's second kick and Ciaran Drever gave Orkney a 3-1 lead. However, Manson and Davie Allan held their nerve to keep Wick in contention and after McCarthy saved Orkney's fifth kick from Connon Rendall, Andrew Mackay equalised. When Axel Bondoux fired too high, Sam Mackay was able to clinch the win by firing in his spot kick.

Wick Academy: S McCarthy, Manson, M Steven, G Steven, D Mackay (A Mackay 61), R Allan, S Mackay, Macadie, D Allan, MacGregor (Campbell 69), Weir. Sub (unused) - D McCarthy.

Orkney: McConnachie, O Rendall, Bondoux, Kirkness, McFerran, Aim (MacVie 46), Paterson, S Hellewell (C Rendall 60), Berry (Harcus 52), C Hellewell (Flett 60), Wilson (Drever 72).

Academy went over the Pentland Firth last Saturday and won 2-0 away to Orkney at the Pickaquoy Centre, with goals from James Pickles and Richard Macadie and on Wednesday evening completed their preparations for the Highland League campaign with a home game v Inverness Caley Thistle.

Wick Academy 1 Inverness CT 4

Scorers - Wick: Macadie (6 pen) Brown (12) Sutherland (56) Fisher (67) Macrae (82)

Manager Gordon Connelly wasn't too concerned about the result as he wanted to ensure his entire squad got some game time. It was confirmed High Ormlie Hotspur midfielder Andrew Mackay has signed a permanent deal to join the Scorries with trialists Michael Petrie, Jon Campbell and goalkeeper Owen Gordon also featuring during the 90 minutes.

Looking at the talent already available in Caithness is how Connelly looking to boost his squad for the forthcoming season. "We're keen to look at the local talent that can come in." he said. "Andrew Mackay has signed a contract after doing really well, but we're still looking. The nucleus of the squad is there, but it's all about adding the bits and pieces to complete the job."

Academy took the lead after just six minutes when Steven Anderson was fouled in the box by Ryan MacRitchie. Richard Macadie's spotkick was too powerful for Stephen Foster. The lead lasted six minutes as ICT equalised when Sean McCarthy fumbled Sam Robertson's shot and the ball fell kindly for Jason Brown to score from close range. ICT took the lead in the 56th minute when Ali Sutherland beat the offside trap to connect with Blair McLennan's cross and struck a sweet finish into the bottom right hand corner. Alex Fisher made it 3-1 midway through the second half running straight through the heart of Academy's defence before striking a cool finish past McCarthy. Andrew Macrae then scored the goal of the game seven minutes from time with a perfectly weighted chip from 18 yards.

Wick: McCarthy (Gordon 83), Macrae, G Steven, Farquhar, R Allan, S Mackay (Campbell 66), Manson (Petrie 53), Anderson, D Allan (A Mackay 45), Macadie, MacGregor (Weir 45).

ICT: Foster, Stark (Wilson 45) Rennie, Brown, Macritchie (Brown 63) Maclennan, Horner, Macarthur, Fisher, Sutherland, Robertson (Macrae 66)

Harmsworth Park Annual Ground Maintenance Print E-mail
WAFC Other News
Written by John Briskham
Saturday, 14 May 2016

Harmsworth Park is currently having its annual pre-season make-over. As well as maintenance on the drains, and spreading of fertiliser and weed killer several other pieces of work have also been undertaken this year.

Over 100 tons of sand has been spread and the park has been over-seeded with 60Kg of grass seed.

In an attempt to break the pan of compacted soil beneath the surface and help with the drainage the club has also brought in a specialist contractor to carry out a deep aeration treatment.

A machine is used to hydraulically hammer a probe about 1½" in diameter into the soil to a depth of about a meter. It then releases a blast of compressed air to fracture and fissure the soil. On the tail end of the air blast, dried milled seaweed is injected under pressure which sticks to the walls of the fractures and over a period of time this swells and contracts with the moisture content in the soil.

When the probe is removed, the machine moves forward and the process is repeated using two metre centre spacings on a staggered grid pattern. The probe holes are then backfilled with aggregate to provide a semi long-term aeration/ventilation shaft allowing air and water to percolate into the fissures. The aim in breaking the compacted ground pan is that surface water will be able to reach one-metre fairly quickly before percolating deeper.

The club has also purchased a verti-drain soil reliever machine which will be used frequently on the park, spiking it providing aeration and again hopefully improve drainage.

Pictured is the machine used to carry out the deep aeration treatment

Manager Connelly Extends Academy Contract

Gordon_Connelly_webGordon Connelly has signed a new deal at Wick Academy FC which keeps him at the Club to the end of the 2017-18 season.

Academy Chairman James Innes said "We are delighted to have secured Gordon's services for at least the next two seasons. He delivered along with his management team and players, the Clubs first ever senior silverware and that alone I think is reason enough to ask him to stay in the dugout longer" said James. "Gordon and I have a good working relationship. We have both learnt things from one another about how we can successfully combine the business element behind the scenes, and the actual football on the field, it's a good mix".

"Gordon I'm sure has spiked interest from other Clubs, who no doubt could offer more attractive terms than we can, but the support he has from within the Club, and the loyal Scorrie fans who watch us week in week out cannot be priced. We are a Club moving forward and I'm glad to say Gordon wants to be part of that".

Chairman's New Year Message

James Innes sizedLike every year that passes there are highs and lows, and 2015 was no exception, with the slight difference that last year's high.......was very high!

Above all else the biggest moment in Wick Academy's 123 year history happened on the 21st November 2015 at Dudgeon Park, Brora when Gordon Connelly led his team to lift The North of Scotland Football Association Cup, our first ever piece of senior silverware, and just reward for all the managers, players, backroom staff, supporters, volunteers and committee who have been involved with the Club over the years. Gordon and I are extremely proud of what the team achieved that day, and both of us saw what it meant to people at the Club, who after decades of endeavour had tears in their eyes. A very humble moment which we were both very proud to be part of.

Our Scottish Cup run also hit the headlines! Not only did we equal our best ever run by getting to a 3rd round replay, we also set a new Club record on the same game being postponed 4 times due to a waterlogged pitch, plus a frozen one thrown in for good measure! Like most things though, if you look at the facts, the headlines don't really give a true reflection. We had one of the wettest years in decades, and we've only had one Highland League game postponed this season so far, and for the first time in years we had 3 games in December at Harmsworth Park. The ground staff and committee literally put 100s of hours a year into the pitch, and none other than Press and Journal reporter Dave Edwards himself said, this year is the best he's ever seen The Harmsworth Park surface. The slope is another job!

As ever, the lows of the year are the passing away of friends of the Club, and last year was no exception. Supporters, past backroom staff and Committee members alike all saw their last Scorries match unfortunately, but no one's death was so untimely as our under 17s coach Garry Macleod who was in his 2nd season as manager after spending many more years in the youth set up at Caithness United. Garry is missed by all who knew him.

We have maintained our SFA Club license this year once again and if ever there was behind the scenes work that needs done that doesn't perhaps get the recognition it deserves, it's this. Quite simply without the work John Briskham puts in compiling and organising the paperwork, ensuring practical things are done so that the boxes can be ticked for the audit, the Club would struggle to exist in the ever developing world of compliance and certificates.

Our 15 and 17s youth teams which heavily depend on the SFA license and funding are doing particularly well this year, with the 17s unbeaten this season as I write, with James Robertson as manager guiding the hopefuls of tomorrow through the youth system. The 15s which play under the Caithness United banner are again doing well, and already there are players we see that will one day play for the 1st team. Thanks to all involved.

Last but not least I must thank my committee of which unless you've ever been on one will not realise how hard we all must work to keep the club going. The old saying of a committee being '12 men who can't make their mind up, led by one man who can't make a decision' obviously hasn't been at the Wick Academy boardroom table!

It's worth mentioning in the era of social media that your committee who seem to cope in life out with the boardroom, don't all of a sudden become incapable of doing what's best within it. We sit fortnightly, or as required for roughly 1 hour 30 mins with all the facts in front of us, and are elected by the members to do the best for the Club. People who spend 1 min 30 seconds writing criticism on social media are a fact of modern day life, but thankfully the silent majority appreciate the Club is run professionally, business-like, properly and with integrity.

As I enter the second half of my 3 year tenure as Chairman, I wish you all a happy and prosperous 2016, and if the highs of 2015 can be repeated this year it would be nothing short of fantastic!

C'mon 'e Scorries!

James

Grant Campbell Transferred to Cove Rangers

Grant_Campbell

Wick Academy would like to announce the transfer of Grant Campbell to Cove Rangers FC.

Wick Chairman James Innes said "Grant will be massive boots to fill, and everyone at the Club is as disappointed he's leaving as we were glad he came here 18 months ago, with the desire to help his home town club lift our first senior silverware" said James.

"Grant is a gritty footballer on the park, and a gentleman footballer off it, simple as that. It's been a pleasure to have him at the Club, but unfortunately for us his work and family commitments have made his unstinting travelling and time away from his home in Cove just too much"

"He leaves the Club on the absolute finest of terms, and we thank him for his service, and wish him the genuine best both on and off the park. The door at Harmsworth Park will always be open for him to return. Cove Rangers FC and their officials have been highly professional and acted with the decorum Grant deserved throughout the deal" added James.

Chairman's Message Of Thanks Print E-mail
WAFC Latest News

Wednesday, 25 November 2015

Message of thanks from Chairman James Innes

Wow! What a day for Wick Academy FC and everyone involved with the Club. We've finally lifted that elusive silverware that has been just beyond our reach on three previous Cup Final appearances. The expressions of euphoria, relief and even the odd tear in the eye for so many on Saturday afternoon had to be seen to be believed, and the huge turnout of Scorrie supporters to Dudgeon Park added to the most momentous day in the Clubs history to date.

It could be argued we had the most difficult route to the final, knocking out the holders Brora Rangers in the first round, followed by tough games away to Clach and then at home to a young Inverness Caley Thistle side, before leaving Dudgeon Park victorious against Nairn County who have been to seven finals in ten years.

It is a just reward for everyone connected with Wick Academy, and to name anyone in particular would be an injustice to those not mentioned. The Clubs success is a triangle that consists of three parts. Supporters and Sponsors, Players and Management and Committee and Volunteers. Without any one of those three elements, the Club wouldn't have won the trophy on Saturday, so please, everyone involved with the Club, give yourselves a massive pat on the back!

Everyone at the Club strives to improve it, and there's a feel good factor at Harmsworth Park just now, but no one is resting on their laurels, and we will continue to make changes and decisions for the better of the Club, your Club.

We have a senior cup in our boardroom for the first time, and everyone deserves to feel proud of it. You have all played a part. Thank you.

C'mon ‘e Scorries!

James Innes

500 Games and Still Counting

Gary Manson took the field wearing the captain's armband last Wednesday night for the Forres Mechanics match and referee David Watt's whistle for the kick off signalled the start of Gary's 500th competitive game for Wick Academy. Substituted half way through the second half, Gary left the field to a standing ovation.

Manson_500_sizedAfter the game team manager Gordon Connelly presented Gary with a bottle of Old Pulteney (see photo). Gary's father, long-serving committee man Dennis Manson was standing just out of camera range ready to ‘take care' of the bottle and its precious contents.

Fast forward six days and Gary was on the bench against Inverness Caley Thistle and came on in the 84th minute for game number 501.

Gary's debut at Harmsworth Park on 5th August 2000 was a memorable one. With caretaker manager Ian Munro in charge for the first time, Academy beat Cove Rangers 1-0. The value of this win became clear as Cove Rangers recovered to win the Highland League championship. Now today we may see Gary-Gaz or Gazza to his team mates- make appearance 502.

Congratulations from everyone at Wick Academy, Gary.

We look forward to seeing you stretch the record game by game and hopefully you'll even get to taste the whisky one day!

Wick Academy Delighted With New Sponsorship Deals

Wick Academy Football Club is delighted to announce that Scotty Youngson of PHD\Barga Ltd has agreed to continue as the Club's main sponsor for another season. As well as the Comm Bar in Thurso Scotty also owns the Central Bar and Hotel, Top Joe's and Caffe Cardosi.

We are also very pleased to announce that Ashley Ann has agreed to a three year sponsorship deal for our home kit front of shorts and shirt sleeves.

In addition to this the other great news is that Old Pulteney will also continue as our back of shirt sponsor.

Art-work for a new home kit has been completed and the plan is that the kit will be launched at our home game against Huntly on the 29th August. The design for the away kit will remain as present for the season ahead. Home replica jerseys will be on sale from Monday the 31st August in child and adult sizes in J. Gunn & Co, Bridge Street Wick.

Scotty Youngson commented "It has been a pleasure these last few years working with Wick Academy and I am delighted to continue as their main sponsor. I am also delighted that Stephen Bremner from Ashley Ann has come on-board, I think that is a fantastic addition for the club. It just goes to show the support that Wick Academy has throughout the county and I wish them all the very best for the forthcoming season ahead".

Stephen Bremner quoted "Ashley Ann are proud and delighted to announce our new partnership with Wick Academy Football Club. The Club share similar goals, (pardon the pun) and ambitions as our business. Hopefully our sponsorship will help the club flourish and win some silverware in the near future. Once again as the owner and director of a successful local business I am proud to support Wick Academy".

Wick Academy Chairman, James Innes said "I'm delighted to welcome Stephen Bremner and his company Ashley Ann to the club as our first ever home kit short and sleeve sponsor. Ashley Ann compliments Wick Academy FC's values perfectly, a success story which has grown from within Caithness against the odds to become a formidable force in our respective fields. Along with our highly supportive main sponsor Scotty Youngson and Pulteney Distillery, we have a fantastic trio of diverse Caithness businesses that the team will be proud to wear on their shirts this season. I can't stress enough how appreciative of all our sponsors the club is".

Wick Academy 0 - Clachnacuddin 3 - Academy were made to pay for a series of missed chances in the first half when Gordon Morrison gave Clach the lead in the 53rd minute. Smith completed his hat-trick in stoppage time with a free-kick.

Deveronvale 2 - Fraserburgh 2 - Fraserburgh took the lead away to Deveronvale in the 10th minute when Graham Johnston scored a header, Johnston added a second just before half time with a strike from 35 yards. AJG Parcels North of Scotland Cup First Round 2015

Academy dumped the holders, Brora Rangers, out of the North Cup winning a penalty shoot out 4-2 after an enthralling 1-1 draw in normal time at Dudgeon Park. Michael Steven kept his nerve to net the decisive spot kick after keeper Sean McCarthy had saved two of Brora's efforts. In the game itself Brora took the lead on 25 minutes when Steven Mackay jumped highest in the box to head in a corner from his new ‘boss' Richard Brittain. Both teams created good chances before Davie Allan out-paced the home defence to fire the equaliser past Joe Malin from 15 yards. Wick will now travel to Inverness to meet Clachnacuddin at Grant Street in the quarter final.

Halkirk United won the other north section tie in similar fashion away to Orkney. Michael Bremner put the Anglers ahead after 25 minutes with a powerful volley from the edge of the box, only for the Islanders' Thorfinn Stout to level the scores with a solo effort five minutes before the break. After a goal-less second half Halkirk won the shoot out 4-2, keeper Neal Clark saving 2 Orkney penalties. The Inverness Caledonian Thistle v Halkirk United tie will be staged at Halkirk's Morrison Park as the ICT first team is due to play Partick Thistle in the SPL at home,

In the South Section Rothes beat Fort William 3-2 while Forres Mechanics won 4-2 at Lossiemouth.

Pre-Season Friendlies Roundup

Orkney AFA 0 - Wick Academy 6 - Every year Wick Academy play Orkney for the Ken Green Cup. The venue alternates each year between Orkney and Caithness. This year it was played at the Pickaquoy Centre and Academy ran out 6-0 winners. Gary Weir bagged a hat-trick, Richard Macadie got a brace and Grant Campbell also got on the score sheet. The squad is pictured opposite with the Ken Green cup.

Wick Academy 2 - Clyde 1 - Wick Academy entertained Barry Ferguson's Clyde in a Wednesday night fixture and a battling performance against the League 2 side saw the Scorries run out deserving 2-1 winners

Academy took the lead on 20 minutes when Michael Steven whipped in a cross from the right wing which Weir nodded past John Gibson with a great header.

Four minutes later, Wick were awarded a penalty when James Pickles was hauled down in the box by Chris Mitchell as they competed to reach Michael Steven's free kick. Richard Macadie sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot to double the hosts' lead.

Mitchell almost made amends shortly afterwards when his 30-yard strike forced Sean McCarthy to divert the ball around the post.

Clyde pulled one back just after the half-hour when Mark Roberts played Mitchell's corner into the six-yard box to give Ross Fisher a simple tap-in from close range.

Clyde could have equalised minutes later when Scott McLauchlan darted through the heart of the Academy defence before his powerful shot from 12 yards cannoned back off the post.

The second half exploded into life when David Marsh clattered Sam Mackay with a tough tackle. A melee ensured which resulted in Marsh and Gary Weir picking up bookings from referee Simon Maclean.

In the next attack Davie Allan could have made it 3-1 for Academy when he broke free of the defence to run onto a route one punt from goalkeeper McCarthy but Allan shot straight at Gibson.

Clyde threw everything at Academy in the second half and almost found an equaliser when Scott Ferguson capitalised on Wick indecisiveness in defence, stealing the ball off Grant Steven but his shot hit the post from close range.

Clyde continued to press for an equaliser when Scott Linton's inch-perfect cross found the diving head of Archie Campbell who headed just wide from six yards.

Ten minutes from time, Sean Higgins thought he had restored parity when he smashed home Steven Brisbane's cross from close range but was ruled to be offside. The Academy defence stood strong against the onslaught and deservedly took the scalp of their league 2 opponents.

Wick Academy Stats and Records Set In Season 2014-15

Academy's 2014-15 season came to an end with several more club records broken, and a few other landmarks achieved. For the statisticians that are out there the tail of the tape is as follows:

  • We achieved our highest number of away league wins with a total of 12. The previous best was 8 in season's 2008-9 and 2013-13.
  • We went on our longest unbeaten run of 14 games (13 wins and a draw). The previous best was 13 - 5 games at the end of 2012-13 and 8 games at the start of 2013-14.
  • We achieved our best goals against ratio of 1.26 goals against per league game. That equated to 43 goals conceded in 34 games. The previous best goal against was a ratio of 1.41, which was 48 goals conceded in 34 game in 2012-13.
  • We achieved our highest number of league clean sheets with a total of 13. The previous best was 12 in 2013-13.
  • We reached the final of the Highland League Cup for the first time in the club's history.

There were also several other highlights and near-misses on breaking a few other records:

  • We reached the North of Scotland Cup semi-final.
  • Gary Manson clocked up his 400th competitive appearance.
  • Craig Shearer made his 500th start for Academy in all competitions.
  • We scored our second highest number of league goals with a total of 94. The previous best was 101 in season 2012-13.
  • We racked up the second highest number of league points with a total of 72. The previous best was 76 in season 2012-13.
  • We achieved our second highest league finish of 4th. The previous best was 3rd in season 2012-13.

Well done to the players and management team and we look forward to hopefully another successful season.
